 Cyclura Nubila?

Anyone got a cyclura nubila? Just wanted to know how they are like from experiences. I know what to expect already but am always looking for more insights. Im building a cage for it that measures around 8 feet by 3 feet and 2 feet high. And if you do, how much did you pay for it? I feel like I’m paying too much for mine, but always willing to pay that much cash for such a cool animal.

 Cyclura Nubila?

I’ve been keeping Cyclura nubila (Cuban Rock Iguana) for about 8 years. They are impressive animals as adults, males having the potential of attaining weights over 30 pounds. If raised with daily interaction they can be extremely tame and well socialized. They are hardy and forgiving of minor husbandry errors. In my experience I’ve found them to be slow growing. I would imagine price would depend on how old the animal that you are purchasing is. Years ago I paid $180-$200 for yearlings, $400 for a 7 year old female.

 Cyclura Nubila?

Thanks Jif,
$400 for a cyclura, that is quite the deal. Im paying twice as much for a 3 foot male. Also were your nubila CBB or WC?

Cool, do you mind posting pics of their enclosures so I know how to design it?

I was thinking a galvinized tank with lots of rocks stacked up in the corner for basking. I’ll post pictures of the enclosure when im done. Newspaper substrate and what temperatures for basking did your nubila feel really comfortable in. The person who im getting it from said 110-120 oF. Others said 90oF. I keep my iguanas at 100oF and they love it. When they get too hot, they seek shade. Do you think 110oF is fine?
Im really looking forward to getting mine. Thanks a lot

 Cyclura Nubila?

I’d post photos of the Cyclura enclosures but they don’t have any. Most of them have rooms of their own or that they share with other iguanas. My Cyclura freeroam as soon as they reach about 2 feet in length. Until that time they are kept in enclosures that are either 6x3x3 or 4x4x3. Cyclura seem to be much more tolerant of a wide temperature range than Green Iguanas. Mine will bask at temps of around 105 and have been unaffected by an occasional night temperature down to 60 degrees.

Any Cyclura acquired legally in the last decade is probably captive bred. Mine are all captive bred and I can trace most of their ancestors back a couple of generations. $800 seems a bit high for a Cuban but I’m not familiar with the Canadian market. Honestly, my Cubans and a hybrid female are the only Cyclura that I have paid for. My first Cyclura, a female Rhino, was a birthday present. My hybrid male was given to me because he had a crappy temperament as a youngster. Over the past several years I’ve had 4 Rhinos come into the rescue, 2 of which I’ve kept. I’ve also had a very handsome pair of lewisi/caymanensis hybrids come into the rescue this past year.

C. nubila are awesome captives and become really tame with frequent interaction. I am also convinced that freeroaming plays a bit part in their docile, trusting nature. Best of luck with your new Cyclura.
