I took her to the vet and ITS kidney disease for sure..
I posted a message on here a few days ago..About my 9 year old iguana..She wasnt eating and loosing alot of weight on us..So we took her to the vet and he ran some blood tests..Sure enugh its kidney disease like i thought it would be..We have to give her fluid therapy injections..It’s been about 6 days now ..She’s getting 75cc a day for the first week then every other day..She seemed to be doing good for the first 2 days ..Then all of a sudden she started coughing..I dont know whats wrong..She coughed blood all over my wall one night..I am getting to the point already of feeling like i want to put her to sleep cause i feel she is in pain..Anyone out there going through this too ??? I cant figure out what is wrong ..She even started eating for a few days ..Not anymore shes going downhill again..I feel so bad for her..The day the vet injected her is when she was coughing blood..Anyone ever hear of this before..Cause everywhere i look i cant seem to find any articles on coughing blood and what would cause it..She’s breathing ok..Just coughs here and there now on top of not eating ..She drinks alot..Do you think she can be overhydrated???

I’m not a vet, but that doesn’t sound very good. I would call the vet up and tell him/her what is going on. Let us know what happens though. PE

I hope this help, it might and it can’t hurt, put your iguana in the sunlight ,window screens are ok, keep him walm(heating pad or other) not thought the window but in direct sunlight, monitor the tempature make sure it doesnt get too hot. My Iguana had almost the same stuff before he died and I read some stuff on the web about sick Iguana’s. They need leafy green veggies, (collard greens, turnip greens, mustergreens, daliing greens), high in calicum. The they need UV B, lots of it. they use the UV b to make Vitium D3, blubs dont work. The thng you need to know is the calicum builds up in the kidneys first. It doesnt always work but if this works, let me know cause I will be happy if i can save you iggy’s life. You need minium 7 days of good sunlight for a full recovery. This actually the treatment for MBD but it is worth a try. I am not a vet but you know i havent run into a knowledgeable vet yet. Sad PS. for more info on where i am getting this info go to WWW.Henrylizardlover.com. good luck

Actually with kidney disease lots of folks recommend NOT putting an iguana in natural sunlight. Dehydration becomes much riskier as the kidneys are no longer capable of regulating the salt and water content of the bloodstream. If there’s no underlying calcium deficiency in either blood or bones, I’d not change the current setup at all without a qualified herp vet’s recommendation.

I’m sorry to hear this IzaakNLana. You can ignore my response to your last post (didn’t see this one yet). Kidney disease is a dreaded diagnosis. It seems that it is usually a downward spiral. I knew one women who did ward it off for several years with her boy but she was a nurse and would really go through lots of trouble (much like you are with the hydrating now). She would also have to force feed and all kinds of stuff. It was pretty horrible and I don’t know if I could keep it up. Her ig would have periods where he seemed a little better and as I said it went on for a couple years. Finally she had to make the decision about whether to keep it up or end the suffering when things took a turn for the worse. She picked the latter. It is a personal decision only you can make. As devastated as I was that my last beloved iguana died in my arms on the way to the vet, I would not have wanted to make that decision. I don’t think I could have let him go....he was part of me. At least I would have needed a lot of time to come to that decision. Good luck with your girl. We are here for you. |

I am so sorry to hear that. About 1 year ago my 11 year old ig died of kidney disease. I understand what you are going through. When my is was in the last stages of his disease he was having nose bleeds and the vet said this was normal for the last stages of kidney failure. I went through all the injections. One thing I found that did help was I increased his humidity to 95 to 100 percent. This seemed to make him feel better(or at least he acted like it did)But the disease was stronger than he was. Again I am sorry to hear that.

I wouldn’t start Baytril without the vet’s advice and consent. Every substance that enters an ig’s body gets filtered through the kidneys and so adding an antibiotic would add even more strain to those poor organs. Unless there are signs of an active infection it might not be worth the risk. Sometimes that bleeding is actually a good sign, when they are terribly dehydrated they get lots of damage to the mucus membranes but don’t have enough body fluids to bring up the blood and stuff. They’ve basically been bleeding internally all along but didn’t have enough juice to get it out of the body. The fluid injections will give them the opportunity to flush the stuff out of the body and if it rehydrates the mucus membranes enough the bleeding may stop. Just keep your vet informed of everything that is happening and let the folks with the most experience decide if those fluids are helping to promote health and a better quality of life or if it’s just increasing the blood loss.

Yes I wouldn’t do antibiotics unless your vet recommends it because these are sooo hard on their kidneys anyway.
