This is a picture i just took of him. I was able to get him into the tub ( with the help of gloves) but he is shedding badly so i had to get him in it.

Do you think he looks healthy?

Hi Buddy,

If you can provide me with some more info I can try and help you out as to whether your little guy is healthy or not. Please disregard Cenas comments for time being as he is still very new to igís and tends to comment quickly on things he shouldnít. (No disrespect Cena, but you have only had you ig for 2 weeks, if that).

What is your enclosure size?
What diet are you feeding (please include everything)?
What are you temps?
What kind of UVB are you using? and how long have you had the bulb?
What is the Snout Vent Length of you ig and Snout Tail Length?
Has he ever been to a vet?
If yes, was he checked for internal parasites?

Any other relevant info you can think of would help as well.

One thing that I can say for sure is that the gloves (although they protect you from a frantic ig) almost positively TERRIFY him. You canít really feel how hard you are holding him, which probably makes the franticness of his actions worse.

Sorry for the 20 questions, but I canít help you without more info. Itís too hard to say whether heís healthy or not from a few pics which can be misleading as to size, and color.

CHeers,
MEgs

Well Megs,
Iím not really sure about the size of the enclosure, we are workin on gettin money to make him a new nice one. right now we have him in an old movie self from video king, it is pretty big. I have been feeding him collards and once in a while strawberries. the collards are the only greens we can get him to eat. the temps are usually between 70-90, during the nights it gets down into the 70ís, but sometimes 60ís, which i know isnt good for him...that is my fault. Since we have had him we have been using those like $20 bulbs, im not sure what they are called, but they have uvb and something else. I know " omg she doesnt even know what kind of lights she uses"...but um anyway.. He hasnt been to a vet, there isnt many reptile vets around here, the one place there is around here is $100 just to walk in the door. But i plan on taking him to a vet for a check up anyway.

Iím not sure whatelse but, i really want to help him because i know that something about him is unhealthy. we are working on the new cage as we speak.

what are the best dimensions for the cage to be and the best materials????
and if some of you can, could you please post pictures of your enclosures so i can get a good idea on what im doing? I would like to make him one with a pool in the bottom.

Thanks and please try to help me Megs...any other questions ill be glad to answer.

Okie Dokie ... here we go

First things first. Your temps arenít bad, but you really need to keep them out of the 60ís, the high end could be a little bit higher to (around 95 is good).

If you are building a new enclosure, I would suggest building one that is suitable for an adult ig (that way you wonít have to ever build another). The minimum for an adult is 6H x 6L x 4W. For materials donít use cedar or pine as they are toxic to igs. Here is a link that has some helpful enclosure infoLink.

Diet: the collards are good, but you definately need more VARIETY. Heís going to be stubborn about it, but if you mix in new items slowly and chop everything finely so he canít pick and choose, that should be too hard to change. This is a link that tells you how their diet should be broken down: % greens; % veggies; % friut, etc.Link. This link is a food chart of all the different foods that you can start trying out on him and what you should feed as a staple; occasionally, or as treats Link.

Iím not sure what bulb your using, so Iíll just say this: If is one of those ones that fits in a normal (compact) bulb socket and it had full daytime spectum or something to that effect on the box .. .then it might not have UVB. If thatís the case you need to pick up a florescent light hood and one of the long strip UVB bulbs *they donít put out heat though so youíll have to use both*. THe reptisun 10 is a good one to start and not too expensive ...

I strongly suggest a trip to the vet to get checked for internal parasites. THey are very common in igs that come from pet stores because of the conditions they are kept in (one gets sick, they all end up sick). Itís not something you would be able to tell from just looking at him, to go to the vet and ask to have a fecal float or smear done *you will have to bring a sample of fresh stool*

I would also suggest that you read the article Iguana care, feeding and socialization by Melissa Kaplan, as Iím sure that that will be extremely beneficial to you while you are working on getting your little guy healthy. Link.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Megs
