 Bacterial Infection information w/ PICS

So I thought I should share my story. I rescued an iguana. Came to me in an "ok" shape. 2 weeks later, brown spots started to appear on him. I thought maybe it was shed or maybe even hes changing his colors since its breeding season.

I did my own research rather than going to the vets. This was the biggest mistake ever! I read something about fungus and it seemed like my iguana had those symptoms. I just put a fungal ointment on the spots and left him be.

1 week later it was extremely bad.... Why? Because I thought I could solve the issue from my own research rather than going to the vets. Pretty stupid eh? That’s why I tell everyone on here who has any inclination of a problem, to see the vets, not solve it yourself.

Before

Today

Its not 100% healed, but its getting there, thanks to the vets.

It didnt start off that bad in the before picture. It started off as little brown areas. Like dried up dirt or a dead shed.

just out of interest ,what was the infection called? it looks a lot like pseudamonas which i used to see a lot at a store i used to work at especially on iguans,i was told by one of the owners it’s bacterial and i used to have to dab triple antibiotic on the spots/patches every day which worked a treat along with bathing which once the infection started to die it would rub off their wet skin and a week or two of more antibiotic would get rid of it.my one ig i got there had it bad plus another skin infection that i thought was bacterial and played vet with ,after a couple of weeks it got worse and actually had a smell like sweaty feet!!i kid you not so i tried some athletes foot cream(tolnaftate)which got rid of most of it almost immediately but then i started worrying that maybe the cream would be bad for his system and spoke with the vet who immediately said it was probably bacterial and to use antibiotic cream!so of course i told him the story and he agreed with the diagnosis and assured me the stuff iwas using was not systemic and it has worked a treat.but i do agree with you on self-diagnosis,especially with any thing internal,it can be hard at the best of times to tell if a reptile is sick,i’ve had a couple of incidences where i could only tell through knowing the igs personality/habits,usually with most critters the first indication will be stopping eating/vomiting,not pooping/diarrhea but reptiles are very tricky, luckily these days there’s at least more vets around that can treat them-just thought i’d share my story with you too!!

Honestly, I dont even know if its a bacterial infection. Thats what I’m guessing it is. My vet doesnt know what it is either. I’m giving him the directions for treatment.

My ig had the same problem, took him to the vet and he gave me some baytril and bactine, did the job after more then a month of having to orally medicate him as well as putting medice on the infected spots, but seriously an infection like that can be fatal if not treated, so if anyone notices dark patches on their ig that isnt coming off, its time for a vet visit cause it wont go away on its own.
