Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? finally i’ll be getting my rhino iggie very soon. im waiting for the st.pierres to get back to me on the cost of shipping. i’ve already asked them questions before, and i’ve tried to find info online, but i was wondering if anyone else had experience with these lizards (jif, i know you do!). i know the best way to cage them as they grow, and i know their diet, and some other stuff to expect. what i havent seen yet is basking and regular temps, humidity if any, and.. i think thats about it. also, if my baby is real squirmy and a little bitey at first, does anyone think i should use gloves or not?? i’ve had to use gloves with a tegu, but i never needed them with my roughneck monitor. i don’t need them with the tegu anymore, but for a while whenever he saw the gloves he would go a little crazy. jif especially, if you could give me any pointers or share any experiences in caring for them it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? Why don’t you ask the ST. Pierres about such things. The breeder should be able to fill you in in any info you are lacking. They obviously have experience with the species, and I would think they’d like to know that their hatchlings are being properly cared for.Good luck!

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? Sorry, I’ve been terribly busy and not feeling all that well...away from the computer for a while. You should not need gloves to handle your little Rhino, especially if it’s this years hatch. You might want to clip the tips of the claws to prevent scratches tho. Set your basking temp between 95 and 105, right around 100 is good. Cooler side of enclosure should remain around 75. Humidity is not crucial but anything around 40-60% is good. You can mist him a couple of times a day. Use an easy to keep clean substrate...newspaper, paper towelling, shelf liner, vinyl tiles, etc. Give your baby Rhino a couple of hide spots. When he arrives let him acclimate for a couple of weeks. Feed him lots of leafy greens, some squash and parsnips grated, a fruit treat occasionally, and I feed my youngsters some soaked RepCal adult iguana pellets a couple of times per week. After the acclimation period handle him frequently..several times a day for 1/2 hour or so. Rhinos tend to be freakly until they put on some size, sometimes until they are 2 years old. I will also warn you that they tend to poop on you every time you take them out!! They will grow out of this eventually. LOL Congrats and have fun with your little Rhino. There nothing cuter than a baby! If you have any further questions feel free to email me at jiffypop61@hotmail.com.

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? thanks jif. yea i didnt want to CONSTANTLY email the st.pierres with questions, i’m sure their busy. they said they use cypress, have you used newspaper or paper towels for young ones before? the only thing im thinking about now is for the first couple weeks how will i change the paper towels without taking him/her out of the cage, freaking the poor thing outt? oh, do you know the dimensions of a 39 gallon long tank? i have a 20gallon long, a 40 long, and a 40 breeder, stella says to have their cage small at first so there not always hiding, which size do you think will be best? or i can try and find a 39 long. i asked which size would be best, but she just said they use 39 gallon longs, im not sure what that is. thanks for the email addy, im sure it will come in handy in the future.

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? Even if Stella suggested it, I’d stay away from Cypress mulch. The smaller pieces are ingestable and could cause problems. Changing the Rhinos papers daily or even every other day won’t stress it out that much. I use newspapers on my babies and on any caged adults. The only species of iguanas that I use other substrates are the Desert Iguanas and adult Spinytails. I’d start the baby out in the 20 long and then move to the 40 breeder in a few months time. Good luck!

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? Hey Lizardking, I wasn’t trying to be rude or anything in suggesting you ask them for more info... I too have been researching care for a rhino ig, as I hope to be getting one soon as well. You just seemed as though you needed the info immediately (from the tone of your posts), and since you were lucky enough to have access to the breeders I suggested you ask them. Jif is great, eh?! So much knowledge and experience, and takes the time to help us out! I contacted the St.Pierres too since my last post, and they sent me a great deal of info. After reading it I know why you wanted other opinions (especially on substrate). Good luck and let me know how it goes. We might even end up raising siblings at the same time!

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? thanks, i wasn’t sure how you were coming across before. i can see how you thought i was so urgent by my posts, but they had just told me they were going to hold one of the babies till wednesday, so i was excited and wanted to get my last questions answered, and see what others thought. so are you thinking of getting a baby this season? that would be cool raising siblings at the same time. have you found any books on cyclura? i’ve looked on amazon.com and the only one containing any info is "iguana’s for dummies".

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? Unfortunately you won’t find books out there with info on Cyclura husbandry. Any of the "good" Green Iguana books will help you out tho. I prefer "The Green Iguana Manual" by James Hatfield III. You will also find some very interesting articles at www.Cyclura.com and David Blair has a 7 page care sheet there. At the site do a search for West Indian Island Rock Iguanas and you should find it there.

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? I agree, "The Green Iguana Manual" is a good one. I’m planning on getting a Cyclura once I get my enclosures situated. I have one more enclosure that I am investing in.Also, how long would a 29" long x 23" wide enclosure last for a Rhino Iguana? I would really like to get my hands on a blue rock iguana, or some sort of hybrid, but I hear those are hard to find.

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? That enclosure would last less than a year if the Rhino grows normally. My yearlings are now 9 inches SVL and 24 inches STL, over 700 grams. I know someone that has a Grand Cayman Blue hybrid hatchling for sale right now...I believe the asking price is $400. If you are interested let me know and I will give you their contact info. This is a photo of 2 babies from the clutch.

Rhino Iguana Care?? Jif? Oh boy.... I have to say that I am interested. We’ll see how I can come up with the $400. Isn’t that a good price for one? That’s less expensive than I thought it would be.
