Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? does anyone know if there is a cost difference (electric bill) w/ florescent UVB bulbs and the other kind of uvb emitter? (i forgot what they’re called.)

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? I’m sure flourescents use less electricity because they don’t put off heat but since you need another heat bulb anyway, then I suppose you are wasting even more electricity. If you can get your cage hot enough with a Mercury Vapor Bulb which gives off UVB, you may be ahead of the game. I have no data to prove my theory, but it would be my logical guess. Maybe Jif can give a better answer since she has a lot of bulbs for her reptiles. I’m sure she has to consider the electric bills more than me!

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? yes. hers must be through the roof! i have to use 2 250 watt CHE’s to heat the cage. this might change though because i’m moving soon and a lot of the reason why i can’t get the cage heated enough is because of the type of apartment i live in now. When we move we’ll probably re-do the cage a bit aswell. more money spent!!

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? Yup, we’re coming into my real expensive season now...winter in Michigan. IF you can heat the cage adequately with a MV bulb and a CHE (which can remain on at night) that is the way to go. If not, I would suggest a good fluorescent UVB used in conjunction with some 45 watt halogen flood lamps from the hardware store. The halogens put out a ton of heat at a much lower wattage compared to regular incandescent bulbs. Conserving the heat that you are providing is the key. A closed in enclosure is the economical choice so get rid of an wire that you possibly can. Replace it with wood or plexiglass I use MV bulbs during the day and human heating pads or CHE’s at night. I do keep the upstairs lizard rooms fairly warm anyway so this isn’t as much of a concern as the downstairs.

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? Yep...I figured in Michigan you’d have quite a time of it keeping all those reptiles warm (or else you must be blasting the heat!) I had heard that radient heat panels didn’t use as much power (over CHEs). I’ve never used one though and they are much more expensive. Do you use any of those?

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? You would benefit from utilizing some halogen flood bulbs. You could probably replace those 150 watt bulbs with 50 watt halogens and save some electrical costs. They cost between $3 and $6 at your local hardware or home improvement store. Check it out! With winter quickly approaching I expect my electric bill to hit the $450/mo range pretty soon.

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? jif- or anyone else that can answer this- my cage is 6 feet long. 4 feet high, 2 feet deep. it takes 2 CHE’S at 250 watts ea. to heat it to the 90’s, and occasionally i can get away w/ 1 CHE and a night bulb that puts out a bit of heat. how much heat will the halogens provide? would it provide enough to replace the CHE’S altogether?

Electricity cost differences w/ bulbs? the cage is plexiglass,w/ hardware cloth on top, wood molding around the edges. we’ve covered quite alot of the top up w styrofoam and cardbord to hold some more heat in, except where the lights/ heat are beating down.( don’t want to cause any fires, god forbid!)
