 Heat for donatello

hi, it’s me, jesse, donatello’s mom. the little darling has deigned not to disappear for the past two days. there was a chill on the air this morning. i need to think in terms of getting him a heater (the light above is cage is full spectrum, no heat). he only has his hot rock. and yes, i know, hot rocks are evil, but i didn’t know it last october, when i gave one to my boyfriend so the ig wouldn’t freeze to death (and it’s probably the only reason he didn’t). when i got him he had burn marks on his tummy, so i made a cover that only covers the top of the rock, so he won’t burn himself and i won’t burn the house down. since we live in texas, this has been fine all summer--he doesn’t even use it much (if there’s two things texas has plenty of, they’re heat and humidity).

so, i’ve been online, looking, and i found under-the-tank heaters, which i don’t think i like because what if he wants to get away from it for a bit? and i found these small, thin, under-tank or tank-wall-mount heaters that seem better. and then of course there are heat lamps, but what if sometimes he wants light but not heat? what works best (w/i a very tight budget--mommy has been unemployed since may)? i’m thinking, too, he’s outgrowing his tank, which might make any tank-attached heater obsolete quickly. and he free-roams a lot, so i don’t know if he has the good sense to retreat to his tank when he gets cold. oh, and speaking of (sort of), i have space heaters for us (last year i accidentally bought the trailer from hell--i had no idea at the time. one of the many things that have gone out since then is the heater.). they’re screen-fronted, but are they dangerous to ’tello? and if so, what can i do to make them safe?

thanks in advance for your advice and patience with a new mom.

Well lets see here are we talking about heat during the day or night?..Tell me what your set up is right now and we can go from there...Oh and one more thing ditch the hot rock PLEASE......It is really doing him more harm than good....

What are your temps and humidity levels?

What are you using for heat?

What are you using for lighting? Do you have a UVB bulb?

What size is your enclosure?

 Heat for donatello

please forgive me for still being a beginner...

there’s a difference between day and night heat?

right now it’s summer in texas and the last thing in the world any of us need is heat. that’s what prompted the question--i don’t want him to spend this winter as an ig-sicle (which he did last winter--he wasn’t mine then). i originally gave the hot rock to my (now ex) b’friend because i was afraid the poor little lizard would freeze to death. after i learned some, i understood why he never grew. how can you grow if you’re too cold to digest your food? i know i need to get rid of the hot rock, but i need to replace it with something first. he doesn’t spend much time on it any more--i guess he figured out he’s in no danger of freezing here. he sleeps draped over his log. someone on here has a GORGEOUS iguana named squiggy, who is actually about the same age as my ’tello, but he sure doesn’t look like that. i mean, he looks healthy now, but he’s a lot smaller. he’s only just starting to get femoral pores; they’re not developed enough to be sure if he’s really a he (if he isn’t, i’ll change his name to donna).

i imagine his humidity is the same as ours--usually between 80 and 94 percent. he takes a shower with me every morning. when i first got him i started putting a little (dove) conditioner on him when i did my hair because his skin was so rough and patchy. it really made a difference, so i’ve kept doing it. his skin is nice and soft, and he’s shed like three times (hooray for me! sick iguanas don’t shed!). i checked greenigsociety before i did it, to make sure it wouldn’t hurt him.

he does have a full-spectrum bulb. i read that he needs that to process his calcium (which right now he receives as powdered tums--is that ok?). i bought the light for the light, tho, not the heat. he also has a sunning cage he can enjoy while i’m outside doing yardwork.

don’t scold me for his enclosure--we’re making as much progress as possible. when i got him in april, he lived in a plastic packing crate with a lid; it was slimy with lizard poop and had a couple rotten leaves of chard in the bottom. now he has a 40-gal aquarium my boss gave to me for him, which i know is far from perfect, but he can see through it. he has cage carpet (because it’s easier to keep clean than the calci-sand), a little dish for drinking water, a big tray of water for doing his business, and fresh veggies for breakfast every day. i bought a screen cage cover, but he’s grown so much that when i’m home i leave it off. he gets out when he wants to. he’s usually good about staying where i can find him. i want to get him something bigger, but i’m just coming off of four months of being unemployed--it’ll be a bit before the budget can carry building materials.

i’ll try to post a pic of him. it’s a couple months old--my ’puter has decided it doesn’t want to recognize my camera any more, so i don’t have more recent ones until i figure that out.

 Heat for donatello

Hello,
For Puff I use a 100w reptile basking bulb and the temp in that area is usually about 88 degrees F. At night I use a ceramic heat emitter bulb they do not produce any light. I live in Iowa and last winter was really bad so I had to get an additional set of day and night time bulbs just to keep the temps close to what they should be. Hopefully, in Texas you won’t have to worry about an extra set of bulbs, lol. Hope I helped a little!

thank you, adrianna. here our winter is only about two months long, so we should survive all right. besides, if ’tello could make it through last winter, he’s bound to do better being taken care of. do you think, since he has a full-spectrum light already, that i could just add a ceramic heater and keep it on all the time? or is it important that he have a light to bask under that gives him heat? i read something about iguanas needed to bask in the sun to get warm, rather than being warmed from underneath like a hot rock does it.
