 Hello

hello, my name is kylie, i am 18, and i live in central indiana. i was looking for information on decorating an iggy cage, and came across you guys. i never was a fourm person till i got involved in a bird form, and its been a lot of help. so now time for a reptile one, and this one looks great!

i have 1 iggy, i believe she is a female. body looks female, pores look male. still have had her sexed yet. her name is shela. i am still somewhat new to the iggy lifestyle. i adopted her about 2 months ago. she is about 3 ft long and is a sweetie. she came into the center with a large male and i am guessing they had been housed together. she is missing the toes of her left front foot, and no one wanted a "handicapped iggy" cept me. i built her a cage, 6ft tall, 5 ft long, and 2 ft wide. fenced in with plastic mesh. the foot doesnt stop her any lol. she likes to race around the top of her cage.

(the tokay cage has since been replaced)

i also have a tokay gecko that was a rescue. one of my friends siblings had her in a small cardboard box on hamster bedding, and the kid would rather spend his money on illegal stuff than on food. but now shes in a 20 gallon long, food 24/7, places to climb and eat, and even though she is very aggressive, i still love her. havent been bitten yet!

(from a cardboard box...to this set up...how lucky can one gecko get? lol)

then my lepoard gecko, tequila. my mother bought her on a whim, and then slowly stopped caring for her. she is also in a 20 long, and the same tender loving care that my tokay gets.

then my girls, a green cheek conure, and sun conure: ceily and alli. besides shela, they are my pride and joy. they tend to be a bit annoying, especially alli (the sun conure) and her screaming whenever i come home. but i love them both.

Ceily- green cheek conure

Alli- sun conure

then about 2 years ago, i rescued a some kittens from the streets. they were about a week and a half old when i got them, so i was bottle feeding 3 kittens at once. the other 2 i had gotten from a friend, and from a pet store. they are my babies.

(4 out of 5 shown)

my house is a zoo, but i love them all.

but one question i do have is do any of you have any tips on decorating the iggy cage. right now, it is very plain and basic. i was afriad to put fake plants in for fear she would try and eat them. but ive tested it, and she bit one, then left it alone. i also found out from my zoo that limbs from outside are ok for the cages, and that i can use silk plants to decorate. so im trying to get some more tips from anyone willing to help. i want her cage to look as natural as possible, and its hard to do with larger reptiles.

thanks guys, and glad to be here!

 Hello

Hello Kylie,

Welcome to the forum. You have quite a beautiful bunch of babies there, Please do not get your Iguana probed to be sexed though, That is just my thoughts on it as you will find out soon enough on your own if he is a he or she is a she :) As for decorating, greens are always a good way to go.Just make sure any live foliage if you use it is not toxic and any fake foliage is sturdy enough that it does not rip off if he decides to be curious and take a taste :)Any branches from the outside need to be disinfected before putting them inside your Iguana’s cage and also they should be wide enough as well. There are various posts with Iguana enclosures in this forum so maybe you can grab some ideas. Hope you will enjoy your stay here with us,

Wishing you all the best,

Tone~ and of course SAM :)

 Hello

p.s. I am assuming that you have heat and UVB lights as well..

A thermometer/hygrometer is very important as well to monitor temps and humidity, I have a couple of digital along with an analog one and also use a contact temperature gun.

Again,welcome and good luck~

 Hello

yea ive got the uvb and basking light.

so whats the best way to disinfect a branch that will probably be about 6ft long. with my tokay’s wood stuff, and my bird perches, i usually rinse them off, and bake them in the over at 250 degrees for about 30mins...but i cant fit a branch that size in my oven. lol

but i just hate that her cage is so bland and so does not suit her and her lifestyle. i will look around and see what i can find. i was looking at pictures of other people’s enclosures...just getting some ideas.

 Hello

What?? You mean you don’t have a 6 ft wide oven? hehe..

I have personally not used any branches from the outside. I guess you could soak it in a bleach solution though not sure how your tub would accomodate it either or maybe spray it down very well, rinse and let dry and air out thoroughly. There is a member of this forum who though sadly is not on much as she is so busy but she treated her branches with Mite off and wrapped them in plastic if I am not mistaken. Not sure though how long she did that for, Wish she was here to set my story straight haha

Anyway, maybe try that. I am sure others will chime in and make suggestions as well.

Again, good luck with everything
Tone~

 Hello

another way to sterilize it usuing bleach is. mix the bleach with water and put it in a spray bottle and just spray it down really good. but you may want to do it a couple times to make sure it’s cleaned......it saves the hassle of trying to get it in the bathtub lol

 Hello

thanks guys, keep the tips coming. i hate her basic cage, and im looking for advice to make it better.

i am newer to this iggy life stlye than you guys, and i learn something new everyday (i think we all do)

i was reading a post on shedding, and i have a small question. shela is almost done shedding. just her head and belly left. i was looking at her belly the other day, and she has 2 patches that have concerned me. one is about the size of a quarter, the other the size of a dime. they are a yellow-brown color, and are milky feeling. could this maybe be a few layers of skin at one time? or is it something else? when i got her, she got a check up, and everything was fine. shes had these patches for about 2 weeks now. also i was reading about some kind of oil you can put on them to help shedding (i read it on here) but no one ever said what type of oil. i have been giving her a lot of warm baths to try and help her and make it easier. i have done the same with my tokay and lepoard gecko when they shed, and it seems to help. but they only take about 3 days to shed. if needed, i can post pictures of the spots.

thanks guys.

 Hello

Hi Kylie,

I am not so sure about the patches feeling milky...

Mineral oil is good to help. Just do not pick or pull any of his skin that is adhered.

Post photos if you can

Hope your day has been a good one

Tone~ :)

 Hello

here is a pic of the patches earlier this week. the smaller one is gone now, and her shedding is halfway through the larger one. im guessing that it was a couple of layers at once...i dont think she had been stress-free enough to properly shed before i got her.

 Hello

donatello had a couple patches like that when i first got him from rogor--they were burns. he was living in a very cold house w/nothing but his bare hot rock for heat, and he was laying on it all the time. he was kind of like your tokay--suddenly he was in a clean place with light and heat and bedding, oh, my! i read on green iguana society that iguanas can’t really tell they’re being burned. my first thought would be, has she been around anything she could get burned on? and my second would be, vet!

 Hello

A vet check is always a good thing anyway when bringing them home. Sam had a burn on his side when we got him as a wee little guy and it finally disappeared after about a year and a half.

Is that chicken wire he is on? If so, that is a no no as it can injure or amputate their little toes. And if it is not, just take this as a question please meaning nothing ill related :)

Hope all turns out to be okay

Tone~

 Hello

the lamps on her lights arent touching the cage, so i dont think she would burn herself. i mean, the small spot that shedded off is gone now, so unless she burned herself before i got it, and i never noticed it. they had her in a large metal dog crate with the lights sitting on top at the adoption place. so maybe from there. but like i said, its shedding off cleanly.

haha and no, its plastic chicken wire. i already read the warnings on several different sites about the metal stuff when i was researching her cage. i finally have a night off, and i am off to set up her cage (with new light and plants) after i finish my dinner. with the hours ive worked this weekend, i have been to busy or to tired to do it. 4-12 friday, 3-11 saturday, and 10-7 tonight...ugh. lol
