 My habitat and lighting (longish)

Hello everyone. I have a baby iguana which I got close to three weeks ago. It’s been in a tank since then, but it’s new habitat is nearly complete!

It is 7’4"x4’x3’. I’m actually afraid he might get lost in it, as he is only about a foot long, tail included.

I could use some lighting advice though. In his tank he has a 10% UV tube and a 60 watt heating bulb. It keeps him nice and toasty, but I’m not sure if it will suffice in his new home.

I thought about shelling out the cash for a 160watt Powersun, which is a combination of heat and UV. It is also like, 80 bucks.

Or should I put up one heat bulb and two UV’s? And if so, can they both be 5%, or is that too much? And I’ve heard that some types of bulbs can damage the iggy’s eye.

Also, he gets too cold at night (low 70’s), and with winter coming soon, I really need to heat him at night. I have seen big ceramic bulbs ranging from 50-250 watts. His new cage is pretty big, but will a 250watt fry him? I’m not sure if I want to use a heating pad, but if I have no other options...

I’ve been researching like a mofo, but I would really like clarity on this. I want to get the little dude into his new home asap so he can climb around! And I also want him to have the best care that I can provide.

So please, tell me what you guys do, light-wise.I’ve gone through a bunch of threads where everyone showed their habitats (awesome work), but the light issuse has me second guessing my decisions!

Thanks in advance!

 My habitat and lighting (longish)

I just put our IG in a new house. His bottom temp hasen`t dropped below 79 at night. So far the bottom temp has not affected Ziggy much because hes always up in his greenery. I have only seen him on the floor 2 times and 1 of those was the day we put him in his new house. I feed him up in his branches and he`ll drink water by the drop from our fingers, plus his small water dish is a little lower in the evening than it is when I fill it in the AM.
This tells me that 99% of his time is spent in the upper part of his house. One basking light, one "daytime" bulb and a 8% UVB light is what he stays in all day. I also built his house tall enough to get filtered UVB from the sun, now that its moving back to the southern hemisphere. He can bask in real sunlight while he gets supplement UVB from his bulb. The heat emitter I believe is kinda dangerous. Maybe someone here will help us on that one.
Hope this helps and if Im wrong about anything I hope someone will correct me !

 My habitat and lighting (longish)

Hi there . my name is Kelly!

I have pedro in a 6ft high 8 ft long and 4 ft deep house lol. as i like to call it. and i have two basking areas even though he usually stays on the right side. he has a 100 watt bulb there which is the one with silver around it so it makes the heat go straight down. and then for the rest of the heat in the cage i have two regular sixty watt bulbs set up across it probably like around three feet from each other to make more light in the cage and also too help heat the rest of the cage too about 78 degrees during the day. i live with my parents still cheaper for paying the college bills lol.. and there house is freezing..its usually at least seventy in here if not colder. so i have to use something at night i use the red bulbs at night and put it were he sleeps i have a fifty watt one. some owners dont like that. say it disrupts there sleeping at night which may be true but pedro seems to be fine so i use it.. and you can use the ceramic heaters but make sure you have a ceremic light thing to plug it into it. because it might burn a reagular one.im just a woos to try and use it. lol. .. so i use the red one..he seems ok with it.!

and as far as uvs go..make sure you use a tube bulb i like them better then the coil .i think the coil is the ones that effect there eyes! i read that somewhere. anyways ..remember that its uva and uvb its very important they get both..and to make it easier on you! the best one i can recommend whihc alot of people recommend it on here. is repti sun 5.0 or i use the 10.0 cuz since the top of the cage is so far from his basking area you have to make sure it emmits that far other wise your bulb will be totally useless. i think on the package that the repti sun comes in it will tell you how much uva and uvb it emmits and how far down it will make it. i think its 20 inches from the basking spot or something. so anywho i hope this helps and clears up some of your questions. there are a alot of other uva and uvb bulbs out there i just like that one the best and have had problems with others in the past. plus it ads and prevents mbd .. which worked for my iggy :( sadly i was stupid and didnt use a good enough uva and uvb bulb for him..but he’s had no problems with this one so far! that bulbs are more expensive but in my opion totally worth it! i hope this helps again!!!

Kelly (if your confused about any of it. please just ask me. i confuse people alot)
have a good day!

No confusion, I really appreciate both of you for your input!

I have tried the red bulb. My sister’s boyfriend had been using one for his bearded dragons, but one of them could not sleep with it. I tried a red bulb with my iguana, but it kept waking up. It would open it’s eyes every hour or so and he looked pretty stressed. I took it out.

I’ve heard stories about the ceramic heat emitter. I’ll have to keep researching it.

The cage is 90% complete. The basking area is about 20 inches from the top of the habitat. I could always move it (it’s a shelf) if it’s too far or close.

Would a 150watt bulb be enough to heat a 4x3 area? Or would it fry him? Hmm, I’m not sure, it may be overkill. I really like the idea about spacing out some smaller bulbs, but my haitat is only 4 feet across.

I will try and take some pics of it this weekend and show everyone the habitat and my iguana!

 My habitat and lighting (longish)

Stupid walmart lamp won’t work on my bulb. I’m having tons of trouble getting the lighting right. I cannot find a 3 ft LED fixture anywhere. I may have to use a 2 ft.

My "branches" (not real branches) are complete and so are the ledges. I threw the baby in for a short test run and he was definitely confused, lol. Luckily for me, he/she is not an aggressive lizard (not yet).

I REALLY want to finish this thing so I can get him out of that pathetic little tank. Unfortunately, having to work really takes my building time down. I’ll buy supplies before work, and then at night I will discover that the supplies either are defective or the wrong size. And by then, all stores are closed and I have to wait until the next day...very irritating.

Alrighty then, the habitat is now Livable!

It’s not quite finished, but it is able to support an iguana now. My only problem is that the basking area ranges from 100-120 degrees. He seems to like it, but I worry that I’ll roast his little body. I’m hoping that the humidifyer that I’m going to get soon will bring the temp down to 95-100.

Pics coming soon, then you can all meet my baby iguana! I’ll post them in the habitat/cage thread.
