 The "ugh" bug

ok well i feel like a horses butt right now...i discovered sunday night that shela had mites in her cage...dont know where they came from...she was vet checked when i got her, and my other geckos were mite free. so my only guess would be from the bedding because i use the natural looking stuff. so yesturday, her, and my 2 geckos got a betadine/water bath and are sitting in my mothers room in new cages. the 2 geckos are in plastic shoe boxes with heating pads, and shela is back in her 65gallon rep-mesh. i thank the gods that the infestation wasnt bad. when i bathed the geckos, didnt see any bugs...and when i bathed shela, i saw like 7 mites. i took a q-tip and scrubbed her head. then wrapped her in a towl and we sat in the sun for a bit. after she dried, i checked her and she was mite free. so i missed school and work yesturday...and missing school today and off work tonight.

as for the cages today:

i cleaned out shela’s cage, unscrewed her wooden furniture...took the green carpet off (to throw away, i have more), vaccumed and scraped her cage, and her cage is currently sitting outside, sealed up, with 4 cat flea collars cut up sitting in it on tin foil. its been out there for about 2 hours now...

working on the first gecko cage...its sitting in the bath tub with bleach and water and i got to go get that in a few...gonna do the same with the other gecko cage...i rinsed off all decor, and got the wood stuff in my stove cooking for the next 2 hours.

i vaccumed my room a couple of times this morning, gonna do some more in a little bit.

and i have a can of provent a mite on the way. ordered it this morning.

but i got to go get the cage ouuta the tub and rinse it...

this is gonna be a hetic day...wish me luck!

man that sucks! i remember a few years back when i had an iguana, mites did accumulate due to the bedding. i had to destroy a kick butt cage i had made, very frustrating. from then on i used paper towels and newspapers as substrate.

That really does suck big.

However, it is fortunate that you caught it in time and eliminated the bugs before they caused serious damage!
