Not a commoner here so lets see the response.....

Well....living down here in good ol’ south florida we have iguanas everywhere. I want to catch one (to keep as a pet obviously) and can’t seem to grab one. I have almost a few times but they jump into the water....

Is there a certain time of day i should try?

Thanks(and please don’t flame me)!

I read somewhere that loud recording of a hawk’s scream will freeze an iguana in it’s place. Iggies are preyed on by birds in the wild so they have a natural fear of them.

Worth a try.

Thats very interesting....does that work on other lizards too?

Personally I think that is really cruel to do something like that and I know you won’t care about my opinion but why not just leave them alone, If they are surviving out there and do not wish to be captured and caged and let them be, There are plenty of homeless Iguanas needing rescues.

OP, thats just a disaster waiting to happen. You will probably cause injury to yourself and the iguana. And good luck on trying to tame an iguana caught in the wild, not gonna happen.

Why not get a captive bred iggy?

In Florida, people are encourged to kill feral iguanas on the spot.

I recently stumbled onto a youtube video of a guy slitting the troat of a wild iguana he caught in Florida.

The lizards are unwelcome and destructive to the states natural ecosystem.

I honestly think that if the OP wants to capture and care for one of these animals, then "cruel" is not a word that should be used to describe his actions.

And taming a wild iguana may be difficult, but it can happen.

Lots of negativity in here, lol.

Hey Jonah,

Why exactly do you want to add an iggy to your multitude of pets? Lol

isnt it illegal to take a wild animal out of their natural habbitat and make them a pet? i wouldnt advise taking one from the wild. if you want one badly enough to think of doing this, then buy a hand raised one. you’d have better luck. just remember how long they live, how big they get, they all have different personilaties, and they are very expensive to care for! lol.

That’s not a definite can happen. Even some captive bread igaunas can not be tamed. A wild one would take several years at the least I’d imagine. And iggys wild caught kept in cages are known to bonk there heads against the cage and decrease or stop in eating. I’ll look up the section on iguana farming in my book that talks about back when wild caught iggys were sent to the states for pets.

Because I have always liked iggys and if I can save one then thats better than supporting the killing of the WC gravid females that give birth to the "captive born" iggys we have in the stores down here.

Yes, I know that taming will be difficult

No, damage will not come to the iguanas (I have caught more wild things than a iggy.)

Yes, the state does want them all dead even though they aren’t hurting anyone or anything.

Hey Jonah, I honestly wouldnt do the captive thing. I have an iggy that was free at first but these people went and captured him and sold him to the pet store (which I didnt know this) and then I bought him. Well ever since then it has been a time trying to tame him! I got Yoshi when he was a hatchling and He is huge now. I cant barely hold him and his claws are so bad. Its so hard to tame an iggy that A. has been negleted for a long period or B. is a wild animal. I would seriouslygo for the bred iggys that need a good home and have been tamed already from a handler. OR go to a shelter b/c you live in Florida so I know there are plenty of iggys that need a good home. I would look for one that is pretty tame cuz Im tellin you Jonah when an iggy gets to be 2 feet or bigger and isnt tame...it hurts to pick them up AND they dont trust AT all!!! So, I would be careful about getting an iggy. Its kinda like getting a monitor. You dont just "get" one. You need to do some research first and make sure you have the means of taking care of this animal ANd the freakin space! Im talkin 8 feet long and high space here will be needed eventually to care for this animal. Also, the wild big iggy could have a diesese that you dont know of and if you capture one and it scratches you or bites you...salminela and or it could give ALL your precious lizards that you breed and have as pets...death! I know your exstensive pet collection adn an iggy should be for the person that A. has the time to tame and B. has the room like I stated above and C. doesnt have thousands of animals already.

I know you love animals/reptiles VERY much and would like to have one of each but like I said before iggys are for the iggy lovers as in they have many of them already or they just have one and maybe another reptile. There are some people out there that DO have plenty so dont get me worng but from MY experiance itsnot as easy as a lot of people think. They are cute when they are little but when they get bigger and they arent tame....trouble trouble!

Good luck though, I hope you go for the rescue approach and not the wild caught thing. Or just not one at all untill you down size at least.

Take care, Lauren~

Ok.....thanks everyone Probably won’t "get" one. Any ideas on how to attract iggies to my backyard? I’m surprised they haven’t come to eat the tortoise food.

I only hope that by helping you "attract" these iggys you mean just to look at and take pics. NOT to catch! I would get big heads of lettuce which I know for captive iggs this isnt good but wild iggs eat just about anything and get some bee pollen. They are sttracted to the smell. I would get some dark green leafy items and get a nice big plate or bowl and dice it up and also get some strawberries and red bell peppers (not too much) they are also attracted to the color red.

Good luck!

Please dont go capturing a freakin wild iggy Jonah!

Thats why. lol. Not to catch them. :)

Why aren’t they attracted to the tortoises then? I feed them veggies and they are outside lol.

What do you mean "attracted to the tortoises?" Why would an iggy be attracted to a turtle? Maybe the iggys are just what everyone syad they are...scared! lol! A lot of iggys are really scared of people and unless they are REALLY hungry, then they wont come up and eat. Who knows, just try to make the environment a safe harbor. As in no cars, no loud noises, no cats dogs... etc.
