my reptile collection exists of: 3 leopard geckos 1 egyptian sandfish 1 ball python and 1 iggy i just got my first green iguana, well have had it for about 1 week now but, i got it from a man who found it in his garage. i just finished building a 4foot long x 2 ft high x 2.5 ft wide, i know i know its not to great for an iggy but thats got to deal with my question. im planning on building a 5ft high x 3ft wide x 3ft length... made out of 3/4 in PVC pipe and plastic coated chicken wire , and was wondering if this would be ok for my iggy... she is only 3 ft long and about 1 yr old. right now i have proper husbandry for my iggy... ~hot end: 94 degrees F ~cool end: 79 degrees F ~basking spot: 103 degrees F ~humidity: misted 2 times daily, working on getting a humidity gauge :) ~2 hides ~water dish big enough for soaking ~plenty of logs... driftwood, grapewood, and a couple sticks out the back yard, dissenfected of course!:)lol ~and a rubber coated heat cord (only gets to 80 degrees F on the cord) wrapped on the largest stick |

I built a cage for my iggy when she was about 12 inches long and now in about less than a year she has gotten 3 times that size. They like height but also need more length than3 feet across. I would go for an 8ft long x 6ft highx 5ft width for your final cage. Mine is 6 ft highx 4 ft widthx 4 ft long. We are about to turn it on its side and add a top to it so it will be all the same all around. About 6-7 all around. Your iggy needs humidity so.. I would do the plastic tough chicken wire but then put plexi-glass all around the cage with holes on the top where the lights will be. The iggydoesnt need a hiding place b/c then it wont get the lighting and UVB it needs to thrive. Make sure you have shelves sothe iggy can lay on it and bask. I would take the wore out too, b.c it could default and you not know it and it can burn your iggy badly!! I have seen and heard BAD stories of this. What do you feed your iggy? Do you have lots of green leaf vines...branches with green leafs?? If not go to Wal-Mart and go to the floral section where the crafts are and you will find A LOT of silk plants you can hang from the cage so the iggy can feel safe in his/her new environment! A humidifier would be ideal for the humidity to stay at 80% but I dont have one I just bathe mine when I can get her crazy self out of the cage and I spray not mist her body and mouth for extra water. If you mist you can couse RI (respitory infection) in the iggy. If you need to mist... mist around the body on the plants and what not. I would do this SEVERAL times a day! like 7-10 times. Good luck! And answer these ???’S so we can further help you. Take care, Lauren~ |

and about getting plants from walmart...well i was gonna pay 5$ for a vine that sucked...and i kept looking...and i found a 6 ft GARLAND for 3$ and it was 10 times better looking than the vine. lol. but i had someone point out to me something to watch for on the silk plants. get the ones with the whole leaves, not a leaf that has little parts to it, like a fern. they may bite off the little fern parts and swallow them. the shelves, ramps, and basking parts are important also. i dont know how new you are to iggys but food wise: collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens are the IMPORTANT veggies...then small amounts of bok choy occasionally, green beans, peppers, squash, zuccuni, banana occasionally (someone told me banana made their iggy hyper, and i watched mine one day, and its true...its like an energy supplement for iggys lol) strawberries, grapes, melons, pears, apples, and just about anything else. try to keep things balanced out. its also nice to have an iguana calcium spray for their food. mine i just spray a little on, let it sit for 15 seconds, and away she goes. haha. calicum is a big thing in the iggy world. iggys can get metabolic bone disease easily. another reason for the uvb light. oh and as much fresh sun shine as you can give it. mine has a 65 gallon rep-mesh cage for outside that she sits in. its starting to get cold, so shes not out as much as she used to be. they also like warm baths. i fill my bath tub up half way(i clean it first) then let her swim and soak for about 15-20 mins, then we sit in the living room together, her wrapped in a towl...and enjoy the (filtered) rays of the sun through our balcony window. lol. but good luck, if you have any questions, were here. oh and watch out for mites...ugh...if she came from someones garage...she more than likely has mites...you will need to treat her and the cage if she does...pain in the rump i tell ya. lol good luck! |

I would get rid of the red night light and opt for another heat emitter, either a CHE (which gets extremely HOT so you would need to use extreme care) yes that was extreme..haha sorry I have a fever or another heat lamp that does not produce any kind of light. I have closetmaid shelves in Sam’s hab. I covered them with a rough outdoor grassy carpet that I zip tied as well as heat sealed all the edges. he also has a large driftwood tree and vines as well as a hammock we made. All the best of luck, Tone~ |
