 Breeding Season

ok, i think this would be a nice little post for new iggy owners...when is breeding season....and if its at any time, what conditions provoke breeding behavior. everyone seems to think my shela is a male, and i know the males can get testy during their "special time of the year" and i want to know what to expect, and when to expect it. shela is very tame and docile...unless you pick her/him up and wont let her/him on your shoulder...lol. i have never noticed any aggressive behavior in shela...when the cats get near her, she doesnt fight or get defensive...she darts towards the ground, runs...and usually ends up smacking her/his face on something. never seen a tail wag...headbob...or open mouth gesture. i know to back off when shela drops the dewlap, but thats all that ever happens. it drops, then 15 seconds later its normal and i can go near her. i looked in the archives and noticed most post about breeding season were in december and january. are these normal months for the breeding season? any help would be wonderful here. both for me, and any new iggy owners reading this. maybe keep it bumped?

thanks guys!

 Breeding Season

Hi Kylie,

I would say that different Iguanas have different personalities and they can also change at any given time as well. Sam is 2 years old. Last year he just left little "gifts" around. He was very hyper so no other noticeable behavior and definitely no aggression. This year not sure if it is breeding season related or not, but no gifts (haha) but definitely goes into Iguana prison break mode at least once a day. Whether that is related or not, I honestly do not know. It could just be SAM.
I do know that there are some that have always had docile/passive Iguanas and one day they turn into crazed dragons throughout the breeding season. Best thing is to just know your Iguana and if you do start to see signs of any sort of aggression just heed it and ride through that time :)
It would be good for those who have or are experiencing a total Dr.Jekyl/Mr.Hyde kind of thing to post and share :)

Good luck with it all
Have a wonderful day

 Breeding Season

Well my iguana beat the crap out me with his tail today :( :( :(

He has never been agressive towards me before.

Luckily he’s still a baby. so his whips feel like getting hit with a shoelace.

 Breeding Season

Sill,

I can promise you that they will not feel like a shoelace once he gets bigger:) When Sam got scared because of the blue checkered washcloth (I burned that sucker haha) his tail left me with some wonderful coloring on the one side of my face. Of course, I was not asking for dual though haha the resin bowl that was flung with his tail, left me with a painful lump along my jawline..hehe

Sam is so not an aggressive Iguana normally not that I would call this aggression anyway but more so a reaction to fear. Could have been extremely worse :)

OK so my story was about the tail. He has over 30 inches of gorgeous tail. Just happy he did not hurt it on my mug..hehe

But he is still wanting to get out and he is in a good sized enclosure with the right temps and good humidity so maybe just the ’season’ :)

Tone~
