 The verdict from the vet

I know I posted on here last week that the vet said that she thought Iggy had renal failure because of the high concentration of calcium in his blood. But, they wanted to do another type of blood test. So I took Iggy back today for the blood test and also a radio-graph so they "see" if anything was wrong. Well, it turns out my Iggy is a female, and after 11 yrs is forming eggs for the first time. I got Iggy from friends who didn’t take care of her right (I need to get used to "her"). Well, since she was misfed in the younger years, her bones are very strange and not strait. The pelvic bone is out of whack so the eggs won’t be able to pass, creating some bad problems for an old ig. So, next Monday its back to the vet again - to get Iggy spayed and to get the eggs out. I’m in a university town with a vet school so the operation is less than getting a dog spayed. Anyway, I feel that the news has been good! I was so afraid it was renal failure since even healthy iguanas get it. Iggy is 11, so she is an old lady. But hopefully nipping this problem in the bud will enable her to live a while longer comfortably!

I urge anyone who hasn’t taken their Iggy to the vet to do so. I had never thought about it before cause she seemed healthy. But then I thought I might as well do it, just to make sure. Catching this problem early on will save Iggy pain and discomfort in the long run. I’m just glad I didn’t wait any longer!

And who said Georgia doesn’t have many good herp vets. The UGA vet school has excellent facilities and great doctors that understand iguanas.

Let’s just hope the surgery goes well! I’ll let everyone know next week.

Annie
