 Quick question on Rhinos.

I read on a care sheet they they should eat insects once in a while. Is this true? If so, hom much should be given and how often?

 Quick question on Rhinos.

NO no no animal protein is necessary! A good nutritious green iguana diet is ideal for Rhinos also. If you want to add to that go with grains such as wild or brown rice, plain cooked pasta, or some whole grain bread occasionally.

 Quick question on Rhinos.

Alright, no biggie. I just thought it was odd that a breeder suggested this. I haven’t given him any live bugs, and didn’t want to until I got some feedback. Thanks!

He is doing so well now, I’m proud.

Kling... Why would you do that when you obviously know it can put your Iguana in danger? It may not happen now, but eventually it could lead to kidney failure and other difficulties.

 Quick question on Rhinos.

yea i just got a rhino baby and the breeder suggested feeding crickets too. but like you, i came here to ask for the great wisdom of Jif first:) my little guy is doing well also. although i will be moving in a few days, so i am not going to try and handle him until after we are all moved in so i don’t stress him out. when i was feeding him yesterday he actually let me pet his head for a minute! no hissing or head bobs! he’s still so young so im pretty confident he’ll eventually become "tame". he does seem to be getting used to me and the girlfriend.

 Quick question on Rhinos.

Sorry Kling, but even 1 inch by 1 inch, once a month, is not OK. Iguanas are not "built" to metabolize animal protein. Digesting even small amounts of animal protein puts an added strain on the already stressed (simply from captive life) kidneys and liver. If you want to add more protein to your iguana’s diet occasionally do it with a plant source... beans or grain.

 Quick question on Rhinos.

"None of the published scientific field research on green iguana diets in the wild suggests that they take animal protein, but it does show that they derive all their protein (and other) requirements from plant materials in the diet.

Take a look at iguana morphology and physiology. Iguanas are not equipped to hunt down and digest animal prey. Their digestive system employs a hindgut fermentation process, which is to break down plant matter, cell walls and carbohydrate. This isn’t to say they couldn’t digest animal protein, but just that they’re optimised for plant matter. They also spend their entire time in the wild living on their food plants. Why spend time and energy hunting animals when plant food is all around them? So, my conclusion that they are strict herbivores still stands."
