 Shes got a broken TOE!!!!

Hello, I’m new here. My Iguana, Sue, has broken her toe. My father told me that she is too small an animal for a vet to do anything(she is just a baby)so I haven’t taken her to one. her toe doesn’t seem to be getting better, but it doesnt seem to disable her. Also, there is a white spot on her snout. I dont know what it is, i asume it is a piece of skin ready for shedding. i asume she is about ready to shed ’cause her skin is turnin gray.

I’m fairly new when it comes to taking care of iguanas, but I can suggest a few things. The white spot on her nose is probably salt deposits from her nostrils. If possible, just wipe it off with a damp cloth. As for the broken toe, call the vet and ask. He may not be able to do anything bandage-wise, but may be able to prescribe medication to make any possible swelling go down and prevent/treat infection. One other random note on igs is that they shed allllllll the time, usually in bits and pieces (i.e. the legs will shed for a while, then her spines, then her tail or head..). I’ve never heard of an ig turning gray before. What kind of set up do you have for her? What are the temperatures in the tank? Do you mist the tank at all? How long is she? What do you feed her? Let me know, and I’ll get back to you with what i know. Hope this helps!

Its not like pure grey, the skin color is dull, as if its ready to shed off. I dought the white spot is salt because its not neer the nostrils, its more on the snout.

I feed her food specially designed for iguanas, along w/ vegtables, and i ran out of squash a while ago. I have a light with a lizard bulb, I think 100 watts, and Its on 10 hours a day.

The vegetable and iguana food is good, but the best thing is leafy greens. Things like Mustard greens, spinach, carrot tops, parsely, collards, things like that. I would suggest sprinkling some reptile vitamins and calcium supplements on it occasionally. Does the lizard bulb provide UVB rays? If not, you need to get a UVB bulb. Without UVB rays its very easy for them to develop Metabolic Bone disease. Does she have a place that is out of the light, where she can adjust her body temp if needbe? Some shade and a cooler half of the enclosure is important as well.

Spinach should be avoided, but the other leaft greens are great.

Don’t fret too much about a broken toe. It is common and the bone has probably healed that way by now. If you keep your iguana in a wire cage, you will get many broken toes which is why it is best not to do that if possible.

I dont have her in a cage, and I dont think the toe is better. I have some greens that i can use though. The bulb is designed for reptiles so i’m not worried about that. The toe looks bent and misshapen. In other words, its crocked. Oh, and Xta, those are good movies, i love em all.

 Shes got a broken TOE!!!!

I came back from the apointment. Her toe was dehidrated and had to be amputated. She was screaming, as far as it comes to iguanas, when the vet took off the toe. She lashed out her tail faster than ever before. The vet put on some medicine and gave her a shot. He gave me medicine to give her once a day for 5 days, and then every other day for 5 days. Other than this, the vet said shewas of good weight and that toe breaking is common. Sue should be just fine.

Maybe the toe had dry gangrene? That is usually when they amputate...so it doesn’t spread.

 Shes got a broken TOE!!!!

i have a book for iguanas and i will tell you some things about them they recommend kale, mustard greens/ collard greens, yellow squash, papaya, and green beans. find vitamins for them and give it to them. they need a tropical set up. a ceramic heat emitter you can leave on 24 hours! daytime temp. 80-90 degrees humidity 70 %+ power sun UV or iguana light 5.0 don’t leave the light on over night! cage carpet or repti bark or forest floor (cypress mulch) and if you use it sprinkle with water the decorative bark gives off beneficial humidity bark simulates their natural habitat and aids in proper shedding and respiratory functions they recommend not to use heat rocks because they can burn themselves on it but only use if needed and watch often the light have like 6 inches above the cage well that’s all I know hope i helped a little bit for everyone

I agree with everything except the bark. Any substrate they can fit in their mouth is a bad choice. They are known to eat things they shouldn’t and it can get caught in their stomach/intestines. My last iguana got a penny, rocks, and a 6" toy stuck in there over the years. Paper is my favorite substrate (for cleaning and safety).
