 New Rhino Iguana...HELP

We just got a baby Rhino Iquana (guessing between 1-3 months???)Looking for some info on feeding(frequency, amount etc). Also any info on training would be great! We’ll take as much info as we can get...We are finding some conflicting info and we would like to hear from other Rhino Iquana owners how they raise a friendly healthy Rhino!

 New Rhino Iguana...HELP

Congratulations!

What do you want to know exactly...What are your questions? A few of us have baby rhino igs as well, and would be happy to tell you what we know and what we’ve learned so far, but some clue as to what our asking would help us answer your particular questions. There are also more experienced owners (like JIF) who can give you her opinion on any question.

If you tell us your current set up including cage size, hides, substrate, specific lighting and heat, as well as cage temps (warm side, cool side, and basking) we can tell you if it is accurate or might need modification.

Ours is in a 20 gallon long (for heat distribution) with basking temps of 100-105 F, the warm side in general mid 80’s-90, and the cool side in the 70’s . She has 2 hides, one on the cool side and one on the warm side, a water dish (which she does drink from) on the cool side, and her substrate is paper towel. It is VERY important that you keep a heat gradient and also that you provide both UVA & UVB.

As far as diet goes, all of us here have chosen an all vegetarian diet similar to green ig diet. I feed mustard & collard greens as well as an organic mix of "spring" greens and 2 types of squash and sweet potato to our little one. She is also being fed twice a day now (second meal only greens), and growing incredibly fast.

I currently handle every other day when I have to change her paper (little poop machine), but you should give him/her a couple weeks to acclimate to the new home before handling.

Good luck, and let us know what your specific questions are!

I’ve just submitted a quick care sheet on Rhino iguanas. Hopefully it will be approved and up on the website soon. Rhinos are gaining popularity as pets for good reasons. Enjoy your baby and I hope the caresheet will help you out.

I am really curious about temperment. I’m wondering what it means when a Rhino Igg tosses his head back(like he’s shaking head yes)Also, we were told that we would not be able to know the sex of the Iguana until the horns grow in, is this true? Are they always jumpy and skiddish? i mean its not to bad if we go in the tank and pet him, but if we try to pick him up he sometimes will try to jump away from us. Not all the time though.

ok Spiny-Ig this is our current set-up. He/She has a 40 gallon long 18"wide and 16"deep. We have 1 UVB light and 1 UVA light. Basking temp of 95-100, warm side of 87-88, cool side of 80. Humidity of 50.We also have 2 heat pads. He/She has 3 hides(2 hollow logs, and a patch of moss) substrate using Repti-Bark until next week when it will be changed to artificial turf.(the guy at the pet store told us to use the bark, then we read not to). Any info on how to determine the sex or age?

Sounds good, except for the bark substrate. You should switch to papertowel immediately, and may want to stick with it because it doesn’t have to be washed, just changed, and is cheap to replace (I have to clean the baby’s tank every other day almost, and that’s a lot of carpet washing). I am also not sure about the moss, and whether or not it is safe for them to have in there, but it is not necessary so you may want to remove it.

As far as sexing goes, you will not know for a long time. Guesses can be made as early as 3 months old (some even make a best guess within weeks of hatching), but you will not know for sure for a couple years. If you have a new hatchling it was probably hatched in October, as rhinos lay one clutch a year around that time (Our baby was hatched Oct. 4th).

An adult male Rhino iguana can attain lengths of 4+ feet and weigh up to 30 pounds. Cyclura iguanas also have a lifespan of up to 50+ years so acquiring one as a pet is a life long committment.

I love that pic! Ours looks just like that just a little more hint of blue/Green. Yesterday and today were both very good days for Cheech. We had him/her out last night and tonight. Funniest thing i had a hoody sweatshirt on with the pocket in the front...well cheech decided he wanted to hide out in there for a while and take a nap! So cute he cracks us up when he bobs his head, and turns his head all around looking at everything. He seems to be adjusting well!!!!

Today was another great day. Oh yea, Spiny-Igg forgot to tell you we did get rid of that bark that night. He has been hanging out with us at night after work for a few hours and he’s been really really good!Funny thing though...he hissed/growled at my boyfriend when he was trying to tickle him with the end of a blanket! ha ha ha i told him he was showing who was boss. but Cheech was fine didnt get angry and went to sleep a few minutes later.
