Spaying Iggy
I just wanted to let everyone know that Iggy’s spay went well, though she is still VERY MAD at me. She’s an 11 yr old female who was a rescue and was producing eggs for the first time. From previous poor care, her bones formed wrong and she couldn’t lay the eggs. The vet suggested that we spay her (and she suggested spaying all young female iguanas to prevent complications). We took her in on Monday and got her back Tuesday; she sure was feisty. She’s got about 20-30 staples in her belly which have to stay there for 6 weeks (iguanas don’t heel as fast as fuzzy animals). And even though she’s mad and is still a little sore (though we have some meds for her), I think for the long run it was the right decision. I just hope she forgives me. She’s not a biter, but has been this week. I can only guess that its because shes not feeling well. She also won’t eat her squash - only her greens. If anyone has any questions about spaying their iguana, feel free to write back and I’ll give you more details. It was a scary decision since she’s pretty old, but she seems to be fine! Annie

Spaying Iggy You made the right choice given the circumstances. Let us know about her behavior...if it seems to be different even after she heals. I am curious. A friend I know that spayed her female did say there was a personality change afterwards. I wouldn’t recommend spaying every female iguana. There are risks associated with laying but some igs do lay just fine. I’m glad yours came through the operation fine. Keep us posted.

Spaying Iggy What kind of personality changes did she notice? I am certainly worried about that.

Spaying Iggy Just kind of cranky...no patience for another iguana that used to follow her around. And, just not quite herself in general. She was an older iguana. I’m not sure about all the details I just remember that the owner thought she changed after that.
