| They really are not a great pet for beginners since they grow to be 6 feet, can be very aggressive (especially in breeding season...biting and chasing you), and they take a very, very large cage (sometimes a whole room). They need special lighting (UV light), eat special calcium rich veggies, and need a heat lamp, and lots of humidity. They are amazing creatures but grow very fast and have sharp claws. They do not always mean to scratch you but they will when they climb or hold onto you. When they are angry or afraid they can whip you with their tails and it can leave a mark. Mine likes to headbob at me to tell me he is the boss. If you are thinking about getting one as a pet, it should be a family decision. I would not recommend one for kids as they are hard to handle when they get big. I am an adult and when mine goes crazy, I cannot control him with all of my strength. It feels like I am wrestling with a huge gator! If you really like lizards, keep researching iguanas but consider getting a bearded dragon or a gecko. Beardies are a lot of fun and do not get so large. Most are not as aggressive either. They eat veggies, crickets, worms, etc. |

| Iggs are fun but very difficult to tame if you don’t get them from a breeder. I got a wild one (I didn’t know at the time) and it took me 3 1/2 years before he stopped being so difficult. Now he begs to come out (which is kinda funny) so I always know when he wants attention. Oh yeah, I also had to get used to claws and whipping. One thing you have to do is establish dominance and if you give up when it starts struggling, it will do it to you everytime. I had to break my ig from that and it was painful. Just remember that igs aren’t dogs, they don’t always train easy. |

| Well of course but some people don’t want to take the bad with the good. Most people dump their iguanas so that is why I warn you about what you’ll be getting yourself into. I’d rather not see another iguana dumped. They are not an ideal pet.... |

They are very hard to keep! I had my first iguana when I was 19, and lost it to my irresponsible roomates. i am now 30. and FINALLY feel like I am ready for another. But - warning - they are like having a baby, in some ways, more time-consuming - and their care is VERY hard work. They have to be bathed every day. It takes months to tame them. They will get lost and you will panic. They can’t just eat "iguana food" - they have to have a special salad prepared for them twice a day. And their accessories, lights, vet bills, and a big enough enclosure is very expensive. With all that said, they are very special animals. But I’d wait until you have the time/space/money to keep one. |
