 Average price for an iguana?

Hi, I’m doing a school project where we have to buy things with a limited amount of money and one of the things I chose is an iguana. So I want to know what you think the average price is for a normal one because I have no clue whatsoever, I don’t own one xD. If you can answer this I would be very grateful :D

your buying an iguana for a school project? are you crazy?

what are you going to do when this lizard gets to be full grown? the little ones grow fast. most iguanas at 2 years of age are about 3 feet.

and what are you going to do with the lizard after your school project? theres enough iguanas out there that have been mistreated and need homes. dont add another one.

iguanas are cheap, the set ups are pricy, and the long term care is extremly hard and pricy. did you know that just one of your iguanas UVB light is going to cost you anywhere from 25$ to 50$? or if you get a mercury vapor, its anywhere from 70-120$. that alone is one light. not to mention almost 20$ a pop per basking light. fresh greens daily. a huge hand made cage is gonna cost. vet bills. iguanas are exotics. your looking at about 50$ for a general check up. doesnt usually include the fecal or blood tests. thats going to be about 100$. and you need to get your iggy into the vet as soon as you buy it. so now you have an iguana-20$. a start up habitat-around 200$, a vet bill-100$, food is usually 5-12$ a week for me. the vitamins. the lighting. the daily care.

personally, id suggest you find something else to buy. i cant even believe your teacher would ok you buying an iguana.

I think/hope that this is a "what if" project; they don’t really buy the animal and the stuff, they simply look at the total cost of owning whatever pet they choose and make a report about it for the teacher. I’ve seen students do this a lot lately.

What? No no no xD I’m not literally /buying/ it for a school project I just need to know the average price for one because I’m -pretending- to buy it xD. I would never buy an animal like that only to use it for a project. Sorry if that was misinterpreted xD

woo, i feel better. lol.

an iguana is usually only 20-30$
uvb light-25-50$
basking light-15-20$
vitamins-5-12$
cage-between 100-500$. depends on how much you do
food-5-12$ a week
vet visit-mine is 90$ twice a year.
lamp fixtures and such-50$

let me know if ive forgotten anything. didnt mean to yell at ya. my apologies. i am a strong supporter of that bill they were going to pass to ban exotics. to many people getting exotics and not caring for them properly. and we get a lot of young kids on here getting iguanas and not knowing a thing about them. lol

Lol, I understand, no worries xD. In truth though I do plan on adopting an iguana that a person doesn’t want anymore when I’m ready, I’m actually planning to do so with other unwanted animals too in the future (or hope to do so xD), so this information helps a lot with me personally. No school projects xD. I’m not sure myself about the ban, because I know that there are people who do enjoy exotics and know how to take care of them properly but then again I do know about the neglect that may come with it for the inexperienced, so I guess I’m indifferent xD. One of my personal pet peeves is the goldfish in a bowl one x.x.

Anyways, thanks a bunch for the information, it really helps :D
