Spiny-tailed Ig Questions Hello,I’ve had my spiny-tail for about 8 months now. I’ve read a lot of information about green igs, but info on spiny’s is hard to find. Few questions --- How long do they live? I’ve heard 4 years to 25 years... quite the discrepancy. How fast do they grow and how big? Are they tameable? Like I’ve said, I know the answers to these questions regarding green igs, but was wondering if the answers are the same for the spiny’s. Thanks!

Spiny-tailed Ig Questions Well, I’m not sure how long they live but I’m sure it falls somewhere between 4 and 25 years, probably closer to the 25 year mark. I have a male here that is going on 12 years old and is still in marvelous shape. Ones that I’ve acquired as young hatchlings or juveniles seem to grow quite slowly, taking about 4 years to become adult size. They can be tamed but it takes alot of time and patience. Earn their trust and you will have a handleable animal. We recently took in 5 Spinytails that were rescues from the Long Island Reptile Museum. They are all adults, 2 males and 3 females, and all but the hemilopha are quite tame. It’s a shame that they were kept so poorly and neglected. They are all beautiful animals. This is Ctolstoy, the 12 year old male that I’ve had since July.

Spiny-tailed Ig Questions Ok, I’ve had the same problem finding info on spiny-tails. I’ve had mine almost a year now, and I can’t say I necessarily know any more than you do. Obviously life-span is relative to care and genetics, and I do believe they can live to be 15-20 (maybe older) given the proper care and assuming there are no medical complications (cancer, egg impaction, etc.) Full grown size is generally 2’-3’ total length. I can not tell you much about growth rate, as ours was a sub-adult and about 16" when we got her...she is now about 22-23" and we think she will be on the smaller side for the species as she has already laid her first sterile clutch in September, and her growth rate has been significantly slower recently. Spiny-tails are known for being aggressive, and ours is no exception. While she can be handled, and is handled regularly, she is always quite flighty. Not exactly a lap lizard or whatever you wish to call it. She still will run away when I go to take her out, and usually hisses at me. She acts friendly one minute (once out) and then tries to dart away the next. Here she is...these pics are from today...Good luck and hope this helps some!

Spiny-tailed Ig Questions Can PetCo tell you where they were bred and hatched? There are very few people in the US working with Ctenosaurs and most of the ones available in the pet trade are wild caught. I’d be interested in knowing their source.

Spiny-tailed Ig Questions
If you do a little research on petco I think you will find that most of their reptiles are wild caught. I cant say that they don’t sell cbb but the research I’ve done shows different. Please don’t believe everything you hear from a pet shop unless you know them to be reputable.
