 Well he needed some help....

...let me start off by saying this is not a replacement for my precious Zinder,in fact im not even sure she will make it, but this gal needed a home asap, she was being steped all over and not getting enough food from all her brothers in sisters at my work. today was the last straw, when i saw her feet i asked my boss if she can come home with me! I havnt been at the store for 3 days and this is what i came back to. She will loose both front feet, one is hanging on by a thread, and she already lost about 1/4 inch of her tiny tail. i believe it was either a bad shed of someone slammed her feet in the door to the baby beardie viv at work. surprisingly she is getting around very well and eating like crazy! i really hope she pulls through. i couldnt stand to see another reptile pass away this week which is why i brought her home...i think she will have a better chance alone with me then with 9 other voracious babies stealing all the food and stepping on her head every 2 seconds. so here is Peg (short for peg leg...i think its charming since our big beardie is Blackbeard lol)please give her your prayers and if anyone can give me some onfo on what i can do for her feet til moday when i can get her to the vet please let me know (im looking at you Jesse and Chris lol). Should i try to remove the foot...i dont think she feels it and its barely haning on, but it seems like its getting in her way, and if so whats the best way to remove it. what should i put on her legs to help them heal and prevent infection?

this is her very hastily set up viv...not as nice as i would like but if she survives i will work on that. the poor thing is so tiny, barely out of her egg head stage. i doubt she is more then 2 or 3 months old and she is one of the tiniest of all the babies at work...boy i hope she makes it! she is so tiny compared to moster Blackbeard.

i pm’d you some care suggestions. she’ll probably do fine if she makes it. beardies aren’t really climbers, anyway, and ramps help a lot. i’ve seen several dragons missing feet do just fine--you wouldn’t even know it unless you saw them standing still.

IMO--your house isn’t big enough for you to be working in a pet shop. use this affinity of yours--your wrists won’t let your groom forever, so while you’re grooming, look into taking some classes. become a vet tech or some other sort of animal specialist and go work at a zoo. you’ll be with other people who really care about the welfare of the animals.

Haha your right I am running out of room lol. And I never wanted to be a vet tech. I couldn’t imagine giving a dog a shot. I would cry lol. Funny thing though I did just apply to my local zoo for food prep for the animals. I figure I do have a ton of experience in that area haha.

I breed and keep dragons and I HATE it when people believe they can be housed together, they can’t, at no age is it a good idea. They are not social animals, just because some tolerate it doesn’t mean they like it. People are afraid to split up their beardies because they’ll be "lonely" but a lot of times one will just have had enough and you get nipped toes, tails and sometimes entire limbs like your little baby there. I really hope this poor thing pulls through! I would leave the foot alone until you see the vet, I wouldn’t try to remove it myself. Amazing that she is eating and scrambling around, very hardy herps dragons :) Let us know how your appointment on Monday goes!!!!!

shots? easy-peasy. really. usually the furry victim doesn’t even notice (though my chihuahua pulled away from her rabies shot last time and bent the needle--i had to do it again--i felt so cruel!). and the phrase "vet tech" gets you in doors, something i wish i’d known before i was fifty and on disability.

OMG She is Adorable!!!!

Once her hands and arms heal she should be fine. The gimpyness, like Jesse said, will not deter her at all. She doesn’t look too bad otherwise, except for her size. Once she makes it through this first shed, as long as she is still eating, she should be ok.

Congratulations and Good Job!!!!!

Thanks Edel! She is still doing great, the vet said i should just leave her other arm go for now (the other hand is gone now so she is all stumpy on the one side) and she said keep up with the iodine soaks and neosporin and if there is a change for the worse then we will amputate/treat her with antibiotics because i dont want her arms completely gone if i can help it. i have also started using a shedding aid on her that works great for Arokh. she is amazingly getting around great and the redness and swelling is going down so i am keeping my fingers crossed. also i cannot get the stuck on poo off her back! she apprently became the baby beardie toilet while i wasnt at work and i am afraid to rub too hard and hurt her...hopefully these frequent soaks withh help with that.

here is her now totally stumpy arm

and this one is still attached but for how long remains to be seen

and blackbeard has no idea what this tiny version of him is...i believe he thinks she is a tasty snack in bearded dragon form lol

and she really loves her new huge mopani log, she scrambles all over it, its so endearing in a pathetic way to watch her move about.

boy its hard not to get attached, i really am trying to keep it in my mind that she prob wont survive. even healthy ones this size without her handicaps dont, but she makes it hard being as sweet as she is. and i really need to move her tank because Joe is getting a little cranky that she is blocking his dvds haha, i told him "hey i was in a rush to set her up!" besides we got new living room tables and he hadnt taken the old one down to the basement yet and it just happens to be 4 feet long, the exact length of a 55 gallon tank hah! maybe now when i ask him to move something i will also make the threat of putting a new reptile on top of it if he doesnt lol

she really doesn’t look bad. my fingers are still crossed.

did you find out how often to soak her? I’m so glad you seem to have a good vet. don’t worry about the beardie poo. it’ll soak off or shed off.

im surprised she really is quite perky lol! the vet said 2-3 times per day with the iodine for 2 more days then 1-2/day for 3-5 days with only one adding iodine, then once a day for a week with just water and if everything is looking normal (well as normal as she can look) then 1-2 times per week until shes bigger. this is only the 2nd time ive been to this vet and i like her, they are pretty reasonable price wise too which is a plus! only draw back is the distance...but hey, i cant have it all lol!

Can you say betadine...a bit more money but well worth the soothing it gives and healing properties to open wounds...ask the vet via phone call.

No I couldn’t find the betadine so I got regular old iodine. Oddly enough I even had a hard time findin that. What is the difference between the two? Peggy’s still doing awesome but I’m a little worried about her breathing. I posted a question about it in the bearded dragon section but no one answered if anyone wants to check it out. Also I wish she would eat more. She is eating but I ly one or two crix at a time so I have to take her out and feed her a billion times a day lol. But she did jut go through a traumatic move and her poor legs arnt helping so I don’t blame her for not having a huge appetite. Plus I have to handle her a lot which I normally wouldn’t do in the settling in period but it’s unavoidable with her.

I do hope she makes and that she doesn’t lose the other front leg. Sebastian gets along just fine with his stump. It can still scramble up a tree! He uses his stump as if it were a normal leg. He really does. I hope the same thing works out for Peggy!

funny enough when i was her the first thing i thought of was Sebastian. and yes she really does scrambled up her tree lol. its amzing to watch because you wouldnt even know she was missing a foot and can brely use the other. im sure when she looses the other one (im sure it wont stay attached looking like it does) i will have to modify her cage to be more handicapped accesible but for now it suits her fine! And thanks Chris! i just assumed betadine was a generic iodine. im going to call around and see if i can get any somewhere. the part that said how toxic iodine is scared me haha!

That’s why we dilute it with water...Betadine is usually diluted too at least for reptile soaks...but I know Annie (Pocacho) uses iodine for mite treatments 50/50 with water.

I use Beta full strength on my self for scratches from rabbits and one time when my large python bit me. It really helped the healing dramatically and stopped any infection.

Available everywhere at drug stores and grocery stores...but found cheapest at the tack and feed store / farm supply. Also there are generic Betadine makers ... Betadine is actually " povidone-iodine" and you can find generic brands on line.

the friend sounds like a good situation for her, but only you can decide. pipsqueak came to me as part of a "pair" and i gave the other one to a friend of mine the next day. he said he might want her and i refused. i didn’t even know if she would live. the intention was to nurse her back to health and find her a home, but i couldn’t let her go.

susan has a friend who lives with 6 or 8 iguanas, and i asked her about the awful names she gives some of them (mr. iguana and little booger come to mind). the answer made sense. she said, "they’re only rescues until you give them real names." something to remember if i ever get to rescue--so far, what i do is adopt.

well we did end up giving her to him. i have visitation rights and will get updates often. it just felt right you know? i feel sort of bad because of the timeing of it, it has a sort of "i replaced her with Levi" ring to it, but even if i hadnt gotten him i still would have given her to him. he just has more to offer her...and if an emergency comes up and he must give her up i would take her back in a heartbeat...i wouldnt have it any other way! i would hate not knowing where my babies end up, even if they are kinda fosters lol.

And Jesse, it’s 10 iguanas. And I hope she never joins RZ because then she’ll know I think her names are awful and I’ll be really embarrassed!

well, susan, i didn’t reveal what you thought of the names; just told her i thought they were awful. i knew she had a ton of them. considering the time and money it takes to properly care for and work with my 7 reptiles, she must never get to sit down and eat.

milan, i’m sure peg will do wonderful with your friend. do continue to let us know how she is once in a while--or have the friend join the forums, lol! it was sweet of you to rescue her and give her a good home, and if arokh turns out to be male, you’re going to have your hands way full.

Names aside, she does a wonderful job with her iguanas. Most are rescues and technically, as you know, several are up for adoption, if she could find just the right homes.
