 She is MUCH happier!

it’s just been breaking my heart to watch poor martie sulking her days away. she was always happy in her big cage, and i wish i had left her there until sini was bigger and really needed it, but, hindsight being 20/20, it didn’t really make sense to switch her back. even when she was out (which was most of every day) she was kind of nosing around her old cage, seemingly wondering why she could no longer get in (she always put herself to bed). then when i had to put her to bed, it was like carrying a chainsaw down the hall. come morning, we’d start the whole hissing/sulking routine again.

i tried to make the tall cage as handicap accessible as i could, but even with the jute wrapping and the slanted ladders, she just really couldn’t get around very well. i’m amazed how much difference those missing claws really make.

so, three days ago i decided not to make her go back to donatello’s cage any more. i just went to bed and left her on the basking spot. she’s been up there continually since. this morning i took her for my walk with me, gave her some porch time and a bath. when she came out, she went to the back of the couch to bask, and since then she’s been all over the house all day, stopping by to say hi and get some love every time she happens to pass me. she’s become quite proficient with the log ladder, too.

too many changes for one poor ’guana to be expected to endure, poor girl. i’ve seen glimpses of the old, sweet martie since donatello died, but that’s all. today she seems outright normal. maybe she just needs to have some control over some aspect of her life.

i’m still a bit concerned about re-housebreaking. right now she’s fine with using the basking spot and letting it drip through the cage (ew!). so i’ve given her a water pan and newspaper so she can choose, and i’m watching her so rewards can be prompt.

anyway, she truly seems better today. i sure hope it lasts. i’ve hated to see her so unhappy.

Look at the bright side -- iguanas make far less mess than a greyhound (says the woman who has been cleaning greyhound messes EVERY morning) and they clean up completely and easily with baby wipes.

that is true. are the dogs not feeling well? she did forgo the paper and cat pan both in favor of the middle of the kitchen floor today, which surprised me, because she also went in her bath and she usually only goes once a day.

after she’s had time to understand that i won’t put her back in the cage (which does remain open, in case she wants back in), i’ll start taking her to bed with me. right now i’m just turning out the light wherever she is and kissing her good-night.

i think she enjoyed the walk this morning. she’s a lot heavier to carry all that way than the teenies; my left arm was sore when we got home. nine pounds doesn’t seem like a lot until you’ve carried it a few blocks.

i don’t think those claws have a chance, jessi. it’s been over three months since she laid. i think she actually pulled them out! good news: she gets along fine in the house. she uses her log ladder to get to the basking spot and has no trouble with the couch. i keep bringing her into the bedroom with me at night and she keeps leaving right away; i don’t think she trusts me not to make her go in the cage again. her mood is 100% better. it was a good call. it’s so nice to have sweet martie back.
