 Hibiscus question

I bought the kids a little hibiscus tree yesterday for treats and I was wondering do you just feed the flowers or are the leaves safe too?

Awesome. I was wondering because the little tree I got only has one flower on it lol. Hopefully it grows quickly. Do you have any tips on keeping it happy and healthy?

Don’t let your iguana near it or he’ll eat it up before it gets a chance to grow. LOL Also, as an fyi, since iggies are vegetarians their poop makes amazing fertilizer.

Ummm so I just read the little tag on it an it says not for human or animal consumption ornamental only. Is there a difference between regular and ornamental hibiscus?

I’ve never heard of any difference. I know I eat the hibiscus off of my own hibiscus bushes all the time.

 Hibiscus question

Milan, I just went and looked and three of my five hibiscus bushes still have tags on them. I don’t see anything on any of the tags warning against human or animal consumption. I’ve never heard of that on a hibiscus. One of mine was from SAMs and the other two with tags from Lowes. Where did you buy yours?

 Hibiscus question

It looks like an ordinary hibiscus to me. I know we’ve eaten hibiscus from Home Depot and given them to our animals so I honestly don’t know why it would say that.

 Hibiscus question

Well I did give each of the igs a flower petal before I noticed the sign and I’ve noticed no ill effects. Maybe it’s just to cover their butts incase someone with an allergy eats them?

Maybe. If ever I am in doubt about giving my iguanas something I eat it myself first. I figure if I don’t get sick they should be okay too.

I got hibiscus from home depot as well. It says that because there are pesticides sprayed onto it. Just thoroughly rinse it out with a hose.

If it is just a pesticide thing than time will also take care of that. Unless I get a bush from the organic garden center, I do usually let them sit for about a month in fresh dirt before feeding anything to the igs. I forgot about that!
