Here is a great topic to talk about.

there are many speculations about children and reptiles being a bad combination. especially large reptiles like iguanas and constrictors, monitors. etc.

i believe that as long as the child is taught properly and supervised, as well as the reptile is cared for and secured... plus handled right. that children should be allowed to have them in their homes and be able to interact with them.

Children also are a great help when it comes to reptiles. being they are small and non threatening they are more easily able to gain the confidence and trust of the reptile. especially iguanas. iggies are very prone to a sweet face and a treat. lol

Yet there are many people out there still that find that you shouldnt have kids with reptiles. due to the danger of being bit. well then why have dogs and cats?? or birds?? they are also prone to biting a child if that child is bad and hurts the dog or scares them. or the cat scratching or biting.

but what is your opinions...

and if you have kids!! lets see some pics of yours with your critters!!! :)

this is my 14 month old girl with my cyclura lol

I love the pictures of Emily and Kazul!

And, you touched a raw nerve and I’m about to go on my soap box, Jesse! :P:

The biggest objection I have heard is not the danger of being bitten, but the danger of salmonella. In fact the CDC, in a federal public document warns against having reptiles in homes with children under five and it was because of that article that Kismet was turned down as a therapy animal even though she qualified in very way.

It makes me so angry because the danger of salmonella in a healthy reptile is truly overrated. The CDC’s study results are based on newly imported animals and animals that have been held in unsanitary conditions. As long as your animal is clean and your child is not digging in the feces, there is no real danger. No one says "Don’t bring your child on the chicken aisle of the grocery store." or "Don’t bring raw chicken into your home." but the chances of a child getting salmonella from being near raw chicken (or a surface that had raw chicken on it) are much more likely.

My child is not a child anymore, but here she is with Ricochet and the neighbor children that she babysits:

And with Kismet in her bed:

Here is a great topic to talk about.

I have had reptiles since I was about 12 years old. I am 59 now and I have never had salmonella! I raised my children around all kinds of animals and reptiles and they have never had salmonella. My grandson is being raised in a home with two snakes, two dogs (1 is a pit bull) and a cat. He has not been clawed or bitten by either the cat, dogs or snakes!! He has never gotten salmonella from them either!

They blow these things way out of proportion and J Q Public over reacts to it. Sometimes I think the news media and the government have their heads up there a__es. They just want to divert the public from the real issues. Economy, taxes and ridiculous laws.

I will now turn the soap box over to another person! LOL

Hand sanitizer and white lies should do it... :) I’ve had it once and it’s no fun at all... But I’ve never contracted it from my iguana. ( it was a bet to eat a raw egg) I don’t know for sure but I believe that there are things you can feed your iguana to get rid of salmonella. If that’s true and with the odds of getting salmonella being small it could be difficult to tell the difference unless you got out a microscope. There is a rhino iguana on YouTube that lives with small children and the kid seems to know what he’s doing.

My vet’s office even offered a paper saying that Kismet had been checked for salmonella and the therapy people still turned her down. It was so frustrating. The director of the program was convinced that just because she was a reptile she would automatically spread salmonella like the plague....

ive never ever had salmonella, and ive handled wild reptiles all my life... and had reptiles since i was 8 years old. ive been bitten by dogs but they were untrained. so it was the owners fault as usual.

they really should redo the studies on such things before hand. my iggies and other critters where always kept clean... and every child whom has been near and or hugged my iguanas over the years never have gotten ill.

the gove. pisses me off in their lies.

I’ve had reptiles since I was a child and I have never gotten salmonella from them. I’ve had it once and I got it from the cafeteria at work not my reptiles!

Aw that first pic is adorable. I think people like to exaggerate with things Like Salmonella just like the bird flu and every other flu the media likes to hype up and make a story out of. As long as there is a knowledgeable adult watching it shouldn’t be a problem. Plus some kids grow up scared of snakes or lizards better to introduce them at a young age so they learn to love them all while learning how to care for them:D.

I Love the pics Jessi.....

I did not have reptiles while I was gorwing up and we don’t have any children. But let me tell you, I know with as many dragons as I have had the past eight years.....maybe I should not admit this LOL......I know there have been times when I have handeld them and have forgotten to wash my hands and gone ahead and eaten something with my "DIRTY REPTILE HANDS". I even share my banana with Maxine now, which means she gives it a bite and I give it a bite (have done it since we got her)....and I have never gotten salmonella.

People just panic when they are afraid.....people are afraid of the things they don’t know and/or understand......the people that have this problems are the people that have never had a reptile or snake and have had never had any contact with them, therefore not understanding these strange no furry critters.

I’ve never had that problem I hold my iguana, kiss her on the forehead, and clean her cage. We are both ok.

Here is a great topic to talk about.

salmonella is a form of bacteria carried in the intestines of some animals, and guess what! one of those animals is humans! i have to admit i think i may have made myself sick. i am quick to stick my nose in the air and say as long as you don’t clean up poo and then make a sandwich, your risk of salmonella is so low as to be nonexistent. however, i was throwing-up sick twice only a few weeks apart (and if i’m throwing up, it means i’m dying--i never throw up (since i quit drinking)) and i realized that i’ve probably gotten so accustomed to the presence of reptiles in my home (dogs and cats can carry it, too, you know) that maybe i wasn’t being as careful as i had once been, so i’ve been watching myself a bit more closely. i still kiss everything, usually on top of their heads (anyone who’s seen a beardie eat would never kiss one on the lips!). saliva isn’t dangerous; martie and i sit on the rug in the living room and share a bowl of cheerios (and she doesn’t get sick, either!). really the only danger is feces, and i remember to wash before i fix anything to eat now.

as for feeding your reptile something to get rid of salmonella, as delightful as that would be, it isn’t true.

i think it’s important raise children to be kind, and if they can’t be kind to animals, which never lie, steal, betray... they’re going to have an awful hard time with humans. in the words of a man named antole france, "until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened."

so much of what we do or don’t do is ruled by fear: most advertising is, "buy this" or "do this" or something awful (sometimes named, sometimes not) is going to happen.

chief dan george of the tsleil-waututh people, puts it this way:
"if you talk to the animals they will talk to you and you will know each other. if you do not talk to them you will not know them and what you do not know, you will fear. what one fears, one destroys."

don’t worry, susan--i have a soapbox, too!

well said jesse ^^ ive been around repitles all my life and birds and cats and dogs... frogs and so on. never gotten sick from them.

every kid needs to be around animals.. every kind.. and learn about them. and not lies about them! ( like iguanas and pitbulls and pythons being killers and aggressive and violent) cause we all know alot of the time it isnt true.

the first snake i ever held was when i was 5 and it was a huge burm. that snake is what got me so facinated with reptiles.. and was also the one who had me realized my special gift. :)

emily loves all animals from bugs to lizards already! and she isnt even 2 years old yet lol

susan: that is such great news to hear.. he is doing so well.!!!
