she has to compunction against going to her little sister’s side of the cage and scrounging food there. i was late getting up this morning and i guess she got hungry. the first thing i do every day is check penelope to make sure she’s right side up, and there was sini, eating what scraps were left in penelope’s dish.

i said, "get your little butt back over to your own side." i reached in and got her dish. by the time i fixed her food and brought it back, she was on her own side on her log, looking nonchalant. she let me hold the dish for her while she ate a few bites, too. she wouldn’t let me see her eat when she first got here.

i have to be extra careful now. she knows what the door is, and she will make a break for it if she thinks she sees an opening.

This is one of the reasons that it is recommended.. Not to leave food in the cage overnight. They should be feed and and what is left should be taken out before 2 hours of lights going off.

and i agree with that about the grown pets, but i never leave a hatchling without food for any period of time.

sini has accepted food from my hand finally, twice! she’s getting so much more comfortable in her new home.

While I know you are going to do what you want too Jesse, as you are not new to the game, the following explanation is for those others reading this thread.
There are 2 reasons that food should be taken out of the cage 2 hours before the lights go off even for hatching’s.
They need to eat when their digestion system is working so that it does not just sit in the stomach and this only happens when they can bask at the correct temps and the UVB is on. Many new hatching’s will not eat real good for you when first gotten so at night when the lights are off, they can and do seek out food if they find it is offered as it feels safer at this time for them to do so while they hide from you during the day..
Second reason is that if allowed to seek out food when lights are off it is disturbing the sleep cycle that you need them to get used too. They need a good sleep cycle, just as badly as they need the basking/UVB cycle.
These 2 things can-not saying that it absolutely will happen, cause health problems down the road.

Good for you on the hand feeding Thing might be looking up Hey!

Jess makes a good point. My iggies always liked to snack at night so I used to leave food overnight. One morning I woke to find a big nasty roach in the food dish. I try to be a lot more careful now about leaving anything out overnight.
