 Helo - socializing progress :)

Well I adopted him in March and since then he’s expanded his worl dfrom his enclosyre, to my herp room, to the bathroom, then my bedroom and tonight he behaved really well in the living room for the first time with my kids playing and stuff, he wasn’t even puffed up and even snacked on collards. Such a good boy. The thermal burn on the front left leg is very slowly starting to look better. He just had a shed and is normally much brighter but had his "I’m a little stressed out" color on LOL I’m trying to warm him up people and activity so I can get him on a leash and outside hopefully this summer. Passing vehicles and bird in the window freaked him out a bit or a loud squeal from one of my boys but he never took off, hid or puffed up so he couldn’t have minded too muc, after 20 min he even hopped down to explore a bit.

When Helo gets stressed he will scurry down my back so when I attempt the outdoors he will need a leash!! Now that he’s had a few months to acclimate to me and his room I’m hoping to warm him up to other peoples activity over the next month so by the time our really warm weather hits he’ll handle it better. I’m on Ontario so our summer doesn’t start till June, I’m completely jealous of all you warmer weather peeps!!!!!

I think the worst of his thermal burn may be exposed now, it looks ugly up close but it did fade to a light gray a little around the edges with the last shed, he will be left with some scar tissue for sure, but the vet gave him a clean bill of health, no infection, and the actual burn area doesn’t bother him at all when its touched. He is missing 3 toes, again from being mis-kept, but they healed over nicely. I’m his 3rd owner in the past 3 yrs so he’s been passed around.

My husband doesn’t minds critters sunning themselves on the back of a couch or tortoises roaming around the sunroom .. if I’m working late he’ll even take the torts out for some exercise .. but I may have a hard time getting him to agree to the ramps and shelves in the living room!! LMAO This long weekend he is building me a larger tort table and we just set up a tort-safe area outside in the backyard so I better not push my luck :P

where abouts in Ontario are you? I am in ON too :D! My Ig is will turn 6 in Sept and when ever I take her out she doesn’t leave my arms, as soon as she touches the grounds she freaks out but in my arms she knows she safe and she just looks around and licks the air :D its so cute!

I’m in North Bay!! Where are you?

My last ig would stick to me like glue, but this one seems to like to scurry down to try to find his safe warm cage when he gets freaked. It took me about a week to be able to get him across the hall to the bathroom without him engaging his fright/flight mode lol He’s getting much better tho but I don’t trust him outside! The few times he’s gotten away from me in doors wan’t a big deal, I could scoop him up without him bitting or smacking me with his tail but he’d be in his full puffed-up stance lol Outside though is a totally diff story. His enclosure is mesh and on casters so I may roll it outside, maybe he’d feel more comfortable in there then on a leash. We’ll see how he does around kids and stuff over the next month (although they are calling for +29 this long weekend, woohoo!!)

I am in London ON. and with my baby I open the window and let her sit by the screen, she gets all the noise and smells and everything from outside but if she gets spooked she can’t take off, and after doing that I have started taking her out slowly and she is a lot better now. As long as she is in my hands she is perfectly fine.

One thing I did notice tho is that they seem to be more settled if they aren’t held in one position, like when I hang on to her outside she is free to move on my arms and shoulders but if I were to hold her tight so she has less movement or couldn’t move she gets very scared and starts to panic. So if they know that they have space they are better so bringing the cage out side would be better than a leash in my opinion because they are familiar with the enclosure and have hiding places to go if they please.
