Sometimes i get a giggle out of my life

mommy’s cooking.

which means both dogs and the iguana are in the kitchen, very pointedly underfoot (though in my kitchen there’s not a lot of room to be anywhere else). i’m cooking a tex-mex cassarole called blanca especial. martie will chase you down for a bite of refried beans. she doesn’t understand the idea of cutlery very well, but she’s getting good practice eating off of a spoon. (she doesn’t understand the concept of licking a plate, either.)

then the dogs got jealous, so i started tearing up tortilla: bite for mommy, bite for ’guana, bite for little dog, bite for big dog, bite for mommy, bite for ’guana...

i am so glad i’m single. no man but jim would ever understand the way i am with my animals. i eat after my iguanas, too. i now have more iguanas than will fit in my house. one lives in a huge cage with my tortoise (DON’T try this at home), one doesn’t have a cage at all, one took over my kitchen table, and i don’t know (yet) where i plan to put the fourth one. the bearded dragons take turns being out because they can’t get along; they have a kiddie pool so they can get real sunshine. i spend at least an hour every day watching my tortoise graze. jasper’s still the odd one out--he just doesn’t want to be friends.

i spent yesterday morning moving weeds into my yard, i know the nutritional value of a cockroach and half of my friends are afraid to come over.

it’s a wonderful life :)

On top of Oscar my iguana, throw in a 2 year old, parents, little brother, 2 dogs, a cat, ball python, and a fish and that basically sums up the zoo in my house!!! I feel you on that! I have a boyfriend, but he is out of town for quite some time and I know it’ll be a VERY big change to his life. Stepping in a step-father will be a big enough move of its own, not to mention my incredible love of animals.

oh, i left out the cat, the birds (3) and the mouse. as long as the bf knows about your affinity, he should adjust (fingers crossed).

Lol I’m fortunate that my boyfriend shares a love for reptiles as much as I do,

I have
2 tokay geckos that keep to themselves and just wait for the crickets to fall in and I watch them chase em around it’s cute.
2 leopard geckos which both have their own kingdom due to the castle couldn’t be shared quite the little divas lol
1 bearded dragon who thinks glass dancing for mommy is her hobby
Was 2 now 3 iguanas once of which is a complete brat and the other only likes me on occasion but they take up almost a entire wall with both of their enclosures and the 3rd is in rough shape but a complete doll I hope she pulls through.
1 chinchilla who has been dubbed the ladies man and mommy’s little boy lol he’s very smart I’ve given up the closet in my bedroom to fit him in
1 Honduran milk snake that took a bite on my boyfriends finger lol
1 king snake which decided to take a bite at my finger in the same place my boyfriend got tagged and he rattles his little tail at me as I walk I get a good chuckle as I lean down and say oh my fierce little kingly.
1 cockatiel which cat calls at everyone when they walk by the door but when you go near him he’s mr.tough guy
and 1 elderly dog that does not know her age acts just like a pup

I too am guilty of bringing cockroaches into my home while every "sane" person would want them out, I no longer grow a garden for what I want but for what my iguanas need, instead of like normal people taking their dogs for a walk I take my iguanas for a stroll I find more humor and interest in what my animals are doing over what I see people do.

And the weird thing of it all.. I don’t think I would ever change anything in the world for it and I’m glad my boyfriend shares my love for reptiles I got lucky because I can’t see many men accepting all those animals lol

I am sorry.. But I just don’t get how this post would help out a newbie!!
Let me say at this time that they should not be feed anything that is not good for them... which would be anything that us humans eat other than.. Dark greens and good veggies and a little fruit.

oh, for crying out loud, lloydene, take a pill! i am so tired of trying to be polite! you have something snotty to say in everything i post.

i’ve been on here for years and years. i’m the first to instruct in proper care. even so, vegetarian treats (occasionally) won’t hurt a grown, healthy iguana, not if their regular diet is good. when i first started i wouldn’t feed donatello anything but iggy salad and greens; resultantly, he’d rarely even touch fruit! i don’t feed the babies treats because what teeny bit of room there is in their stomachs needs to hold all the nutrition it can. when they’re grown, though, i’ll share.

i can see where if a "newbie" read only this post and completely ignored the rest of the forum, s/he might get the wrong impression. i can’t help but notice, though, that it doesn’t matter what i write: you tell me how wrong i am. so, um, please go glum up someone else’s threads...

Anyone that reads your posts will know that this is not true.. If I read something that I do not agree with, be it you or anyone else, I will state my opinion if I feel that a thread could be misleading.
That being said I will not comment on this one again as I still stand behind what I said!

Lol you get em jesse :p I have to agree here lloydene you do tend to just be a know it all or just flat out over bearing in a lot of things you comment on it used to irk me but I’ve learned to ignore it. Everyone has seen pictures of miss Martie and everyone know she’s one very happy healthy iguana so I don’t see why she can’t get a couple good treats a lot of people give them little things that are okay for them as a treat not like she’s giving her iguana a full bowl of re fried beans every night a bite or two will not kill the iguana if anything it makes them happy to try new things I’m sure if you ate the exact same thing all the time you’d get pretty bored with your food yeah you can mix in different fruit but even I get sick of fruit after awhile heck I learned a lot of stuff from tempest she’s never steered me wrong along with a lot of the " wisdom keepers" around here they’ve all been helpful and I see them set newbies straight on diets never have I seen tempest tell someone looking for help to feed their iguanas such things.

LLoydene, I know that you only want the best for all iguanas. I know that with my whole heart. But, I too used to get bent out of shape with some of your posts because you do tend to come off as very condescending sometimes. Now I blow them off because I know that your intentions are good.

That being said, I should not have just eaten the fatty cheesy queso I just had with my chips. And last week by my brother’s house, celebrating, I probably shouldn’t have had that third glass of wine. But, as my diet is generally a healthy one, those occasional treats are not going to hurt me. The same is true for our iguanas. If they are getting good UV and a generally healthy diet of dark leafy greens, the proper supplements, etc. then the occasional treat isn’t going to hurt them. This is especially true if the iguanas regularly get real sunlight (as opposed to even the best UV bulb) as I know Jesse’s do regularly almost all year here in Southern Texas. I hate it when my iguanas manage to get to the dog’s food (and 99% of the time that doesn’t happen) but I also no longer freak out when one of them manages to sneak into the wrong area of the house, chase away a 75 pound greyhound, and steal a bite. Yes, dogfood is one of the WORST things an iguana can eat and the first time it happened I raced Kismet to the vet totally panic stricken. Now, I get upset if it happens, but I don’t panic. I just do make sure they get extra real sunlight that week and make sure they have more dandelion and soy thistle, just as I’ll make sure I eat more salads and less fat this week to balance out the queso and how I drank a lot more water the day after I had the third glass of wine.

But the truth is, it’s not going to hurt them long term. I don’t personally give my iguanas treats mainly because they don’t seem interested (other than stealing the dog food) but with some iguanas it can go a long way to establishing bonding. When an occasional "forbidden" treat helps to forge a stronger bond, I am all for it.

Every person and every iguana is different. Yes, there is a textbook correct way to raise an iguana, but small occasional deviations from that plan are not going to harm and ig and, in some cases, might actually help the iguana because sharing food often increases the bond between an iguana and it’s human.

lol you got a full house jesse!!! martie is such a goof ball :) we need some video of this lol

Ive shared my food with my iguanas nothing ever happened to them. an occasional goodie never hurt. hell martie and wipp use to eat vanilla icecream off the cone with me when i went to mcdonalds! :)

there is always the correct way and thats why we have threads for the new people out there to show them the right way till they had as much experience as we do with iguanas. and they share their stories of life with these amazing beasts

and when it comes to babies im pretty strict on their diet.. but once adult i give goodies like wheat bread, and ice cream, and cooked pasta with veggie sauce on it. as treats of course.. and some other things lol

You know, it’s a lot like raising human children. When they are infants we are very very strict with their diets and as they grow we lighten up a bit, balancing the joys of eating while trying not to stray too far away from proper nutritional guidelines.

In other words, you wouldn’t put Coca-cola in a baby bottle, but you might let a young child have one with his Happy Meal once in a while.

thank you for all the backup. i’m a good iguana mom. the princess is sound asleep beside me, all four fat, healthy feet of her. she puts herself to bed and if she doesn’t want to sleep with mommy she disappears at bedtime (and in the morning i find her on the back of the couch). tonight she put herself to bed in mommy’s bed, right on top of her heating pad with her head on her pillow. donatello was such a light sleeper i felt bad, because i get up two or three times a night to use the bathroom and it would wake him up every time. not martie. the light is on, the t.v. is on, i’m pinballing around as usual--she’s out. my beautiful girl. i was a little concerned about how having a full-time, free-roam iguana would work, but it’s been great. it’s no different than my full-time, free-roam cat, really. i don’t even worry about the door any more; if she walks outside she’ll stop in the first patch of sun she hits on the porch.

she didn’t get any treats today because she didn’t eat her healthy food like a good girl. one thing she knows for certain (but will still test) is she doesn’t get treats until her "real" food is gone.
