Okay, i have to do this

some people know (susan, megan). i had to deal with it before i could share it.

donatello too escaped on may 11 and sylvester got him. he died may 12. i was devastated--such a sweet, magical little thing, like he really was the new ’tello. totally unafraid, which turned out to be a bad thing.

ima cut-and-paste here, because i don’t want to write the story twice:

i ordered a new one immediately and he arrived on may 16, unbelievably tiny, not more than a couple weeks old. he looked exactly like ’tello too, right down to the brown and white striped dewlap. he ate his first meal (turnip green and banana) off the tip of my finger and i thought great, he could be the new tiny ’tello and they could just sort of blend together seamlessly, and it would be like no one ever died. but when he came out of shock he was so terrified. AND he escaped--a different cage, even!!! i tore the house apart to catch him. i found him twice and he got away from me both times, so the third time i snatched him quick, which didn’t make him any more trusting. i took everything more than two inches tall out of his cage, because he can jump incredibly high. i realized i was having a hard time warming up to him, because even though he looked just like ’tello too, he didn’t act like him at all. ’tello too was sweet and curious and friendly and a little clown--it crushed me to lose him and i had to remind myself the the cat was just being a cat.

i spend a lot of time with him and at one point he did fall asleep on my chest for nearly an hour. a few nights back i was putting him to bed and i told him good-night, and the name that wanted to come out of my mouth was elvis, and i decided that he definitely isn’t ’tello too and he’s never going to be and i’m never going to be happy with him as long as i expect him to be, because he isn’t, so i need to let him be his own iguana. so his name is elvis. he went all over the park in my hand yesterday morning (with a leash), and he may be afraid of me, but he was quick to hide down in my hand when he saw some other humans across the street! i guess mommy’s scary but preferable. my sister’s boyfriend sent over some red yucca flowers for treats and elvis really likes them. i was relieved, because he hadn’t been eating. i’d been giving him baths and feeding him baby food with a teeny-tiny spoon (his mouth is too small for a syringe), so worried about him dehydrating. but maybe now that he’s started eating, he’ll make a habit of it.

this is him and sini having a bath:

and him with galadriel (the new baby girl’s name has settled in to be gladriel blue):

and i realized looking for pics that these are the only two i’ve taken of him, so i’d better nike up and become a better critter mom. so now i can post everyone’s weights and things without skirting around names.

donatello too is buried beside the first donatello, with flower seeds on the graves. i will remember him as the remarkable little guy he was, and he still gets the credit for healing my heart. i wish i could have known him for longer.

Oh Jesse im so sorry! i had no clue! i read the post with the weights first nd thought you just changed the name a little! he does look exactly the same. This is why i do not have ny kitties. i love them but i would worry too much. plus the whole cat pee thing lol. my little dogs dont care at all whats around them and i will never be able to replace them when they pass with my dream dog (neo mastiff) because i would be too afraid of it stepping on someone scaley. im glad he helped you heal a little and hopefully Elvis will settle down for you. and now it will be like he and gladriel are brother and sister and can grow together. your in my prayers!

well, the cat was here first. i’ve raised sylvester from a tiny baby; he’s about nine years old now. up until a couple of years ago i had four, and never a problem. two died of old age and one of distemper.

of course, i’d never had an iguana that tiny before. i am super protective of elvis and galadriel. i will be so grateful when their reptarium arrives.

thank you. i had no idea how devastating it was to lose a hatchling. elvis and galadriel are enjoying each other’s company--i think it will be fun to watch them, too. yesterday i walked into the kitchen and they were both asleep on their basking rock, galadriel using elvis’ back for a pillow.

Jesse, I know that was hard for you to talk about, but probably a bit "cleansing" as well. > I am so very very sorry for the losses you sustained.
