 Update on Kismet

We just came from the vet for the third day in a row. Kismet passed egg yolk this morning, which means we are dealing with an egg issue.

Now we have to decide whether or not to

(1) continue on the antibiotics and hope for the best since Dr. White said he actually has seen some broken egg issues resolve themselves as long as everything passes through the oviduct with no leakage or

(2) have the vet do a risky exploratory/corrective surgery and possibly clean out any infection or

(3) have an ultrasound done to see if the surgery is absolutely necessary. We don’t have a price on the surgery because it all depends on what they would have to do.

The ultrasound alone is $550, but it’s not invasive so it’s possible we could avoid surgery. But we also could be looking at having the ultrasound show that she needs the surgery and then we are dealing with the cost of surgery on top of the cost of the ultrasound.

Of all of our animals, this is the only one I wish we would have gotten pet insurance for. We honestly don’t know what to do at this point.

 Update on Kismet

Oh Susan! Poor kismet. Maybe we can start up a fundraiser. Everyone loves kismet and though I’m sure most of us couldn’t donate a lot it would all add up to help! I cannot help you make a decision but I can give my advice. I had to do the same thing when Lacey broke her jaw. I ended up getting the x rays ( which I know arnt as expensive but still pricey) to see if she would need jaw surgery. It turned out she didn’t and would heal on her own in time with meda an a tape muzzle an alot of love and care from us. And though it does cost alot it may give you peace of mind so you know for sure f she needs the surgery at all. Is spaying another option?(even though I want a kismet baby I would prefer her health over a baby!) idk if that would help the situation by just removing her ovaries ( isn’t that how they spay them). Also another thought is care credit. Almost all vets accept it and it does help with the cost because you don’t have to pay all at once. You are all in my prayers and give kismet and extra hug and kiss from me!

 Update on Kismet

Thanks Milan. We found another vet who will do the ultrasound for $300 so we might go that route. We won’t likely make a decision until Monday, unless Kismet takes a turn for the worst. She doesn’t look sick, unless you know her. I can see it in her eyes.

This is today:

Yes I can tell too she just doesn’t look as happy as she usually does. And that’s almost half the price! I would def look into care credit. If you get it it’s not just for animals. You can use it for you and your families medical too.

its kind of like a credit card that works only for medical things. here is a link for the veterinary side of it. Link. my dad used it when his dog had to have multiple surgeries in a row that cost a couple thousand each.

 Update on Kismet

Oh good. I am keeping you all in my prayers that the ultrasound shows good news and kismet won’t need surgery. There’s been too many pet surgeries going on lately ( my friends dog needed his head stapled closed because he sliced it open and my moms little dog just had to get spayed today because shes only 2 pounds and if she got pregnant it would be a disaster. I just got off the phone with mom and she’s a mess. Chessie is her baby now that me and my sister are out of the house)so let’s hope that kismet can stay off of that list! Sending you guys hugs from afar!

 Update on Kismet

We don’t know yet and are waiting on the radiology report. However, the vet who did the ultrasound didn’t see any sign of peritonitis so that is good!

 Update on Kismet

Kismet officially does not have peritonitis, but we can’t completely rule out an obstruction, if I understand the vet tech right. I haven’t talked to the vet yet though, or seen a written copy of the report. I wasn’t impressed with the vet tech, who continued to call Kismet a "he" despite the fact that I corrected him twice and we were discussing problems with eggs....

 Update on Kismet

I just saw this. That’s great that she doesn’t have peritonitis! But I wish they could figure out what’s wrong with her! Have you gotten any news since you last posted? And was the vet tech older? I’ve noticed older folks call any animal the exact opposite sex of what it is lol. Idk if this is an old person program drs inject at a certain age lol. But my grandma called our old dog Roxie "he"or "him" for 16 years. It may also be a conspiracy because I’ve noticed my boss doing it to all the dogs thy come into the salon and she is only 51! Let us know of any new developments on sweet kismet!

 Update on Kismet

I thought I posted here, Milan, but maybe I didn’t.

We FINALLY heard back from the vets the other day -- and of course they both called at the same time.

Anyway, Kismet has been feeling somewhat better and eating a little bit the past few days. The ultrasound was inconclusive except to show that there is no sign of peritonitis, thank God. While the radiologist couldn’t rule out a partial obstruction, that wouldn’t cause her to pass egg material and her symptoms don’t line up with that. What the vets think happened is that for some reason she didn’t calcify her eggs and started to reabsorb them, but for some reason she started laying the uncalcified eggs instead. A few weeks ago she jumped off of a ledge about three feet high and belly flopped. This wouldn’t have bothered a green but *might* have triggered the premature egg laying in a Cyclura, though this is just a guess.

The vets on her case have both concluded that since she started eating and seems to be doing better we should take a cautious wait and see approach. The hope is that she will pass all of the material on her own and she will stay on the antibiotics to prevent sepsis. We are prepared to do surgery if necessary, though we are hoping to avoid it.
