 New to Iguanas!

Hi guys! My name is Samantha but I go by Sam or Sami. I am part of a reptile rescue spread across the USA called Reptile Rescuers of the United States. You can check out our website at RRUS.weebly.com. My speciality is bearded dragons but I rescued a 2 year old female iguana yesterday from craigslist. She’s pretty healthy but I’ve dealt with her previous owner before (it’s where I rescued my Gideon from, he’s a bearded dragon with severe MBD).

She’s real friendly already! I ordered her a 260 gallon reptrium from reptiledirext.com and an 18 " reptisun 5.0 linear tube! I was wondering if I could use a fixture from walmart for it?

I will probably have lots of questions eventually but for now I’m letting her get accustomed to her new home!

Also, how do I post pictures?

Thanks.
Sam

 New to Iguanas!

Welcome to the Iguana world :D its a bright and sunny place here lol.
I find the easiest way to post pictures is when you are typing a post or a reply right bellow the text box it says "get your photo list" click on that, it will open a new window and at the top click on "add/list/edit/delete" and then "add photo" this will take you to a page that you can then browse your pictures and pick which one you wish to upload. Once you have uploaded a picture to your file if you click on the "get your photo list" again it will show up there and then its as simple as clicking "make a code for image" and then "place code in your post."

Hope this helps :D

Robin

I don’t see Wal-Mart fixtures being a problem. I used to buy the $35 ones at the petstore til I realized could get the same thing at Wally world for $8. And I upload using Photobucket.com. Just click image when your posting a reply, copy and paste the direct link of your photo, then click end image. If you have Photobucket I find that’s easiest. Congrats on your new baby. You just opened up a whole new world of reptile fun lol

 New to Iguanas!

Welcome and congrats on your new family member :D

18” I find is a great standard size, I use it for my iguana, bearded dragons, tortoises, everything :) I use to have bulbs that were 14, 18, 22’s .. and it made finding replacements for each a real pain!! Seemed I always had the wrong fixture for the bulb I had on hand. I bought all my fixtures from Wal-Mart or on sale at our local hardware stores for no more then $10 each (heat domes and electrical cords too - just check the wattage allowance). Far cheaper then pet stores. I personally use 10.0 UV bulbs for all my critters. Maybe in a few months when you change your bulb maybe consider bumping up the UV, the prices tend varies by the bulb size, not UV wattage, so you’ll probably pay the exact same (at least it’s that way here in Ontario).

Keep in mind that if she is already two years old she may rip the reptarium soon, so monitor her carefully and keep her nails trim. I use a Reptarium for my yearling boy, but plan to move him out of it soon. Someone had lent me a 100 gallon but he is outgrowing it now. The 260 would have gotten me through another year or so.

Iguanas love soft things like hammocks and pillows. I use a ferret hammock.

It looks like the lights are touching the mesh, but they aren’t. Despite what the reptarium people say, the lights will burn the mesh and melt the plastic if they get too close.

Thanks for the advice. I just got the reptarium until I can make her a bigger better enclosure! I belong to quite a few reptile groups on facebook and theres a girl on there that makes really cute hammocks. I have 2 for 2 of my dragons.. Flames for Blaze and skulls for Bones! I can get Fiona a really girlie one! For my bearded dragons i have to mount their UVB inside the tanks as glass and screen filter out the UVB... Should I mount the iguanas inside the enclosure too?!

How do you measure the humitdity in the enclosure too!? All my other reptiles require low to no humidity so I’ve never had to worry about that..

You can get a thermometer with an all in one in it where it tells you the temp and the humidity in the cage they have them for like 15-20$ at wal-mart, I’ve never dealt with mesh cages go I’m not sure about the mounting situation but I agree getting a 10.0 for an iguana is a better way to go when the one that you have needs a replacement I’d recommend upgrading to a 10.0

You can cage a cool mist humidifier in the bottom of the mesh enclosure. Cool mists don’t grow mold as often so don’t need to be scrubbed everyday like a warm mist. Another option would be to use a reptile fogger. Did you buy the liner for the Reptarium? I don’t use the liner but others do and they can be helpful when you use a humidifier or fogger. I also mist my iggy with a water bottle and I have a pan of water large enough for a bath.

I’ve got my lights mounted outside. The only problems I can see with mounting inside is making sure the iggy can’t burn himself on the light and that you would have to make a hole in the mesh to run the cord through. I would be afraid that would be enough to start a run or to create a place for the iguana to start ripping.

I’d recommend putting the lights outside for sure! :) The ig I adopted needed some rehab for thermal burns, you’d think if its too hot they’d move away but they honstly don’t. If she laid on the heat dome she’d get a nasty burn and not even have the sense to move off, results can be devistating. My igs prior owner didn’t have the lights inside but had them mounted right up against the mesh and he’d lay close enough to get a nasty deep burn on his leg.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I’m so scared that I’m not gonna do right by her! I’ve actually had some nightmares about setting up her enclosure. If and when you all used reptariums what did you use as climbing and basking spots. And how did you make sure they were stable enough for the iguana!? So far all I have for her are lights and the reptarium. I’m a little strapped for cash right now and I’m not very creative but I need to get her out of the tote she’s in ASAP! Some people have said use shelving units. If I were to buy some how would I put them in her enclosure? It doesn’t have to be pretty just something to make her happy. I will upgrade to a 10.0 when this light has reached it’s peak. Thanks for that info guys!

She’s eating fine and she finally pooped for me yesterday!! Woot woot!

I was goin to use non adhesive shelf liner in the bottom ( its what I use for my bearded dragons enclosures. I’m excited go finally branch out of bearded dragons! I also have a red eyed crocodile skink! But like i said, bearded dragons are my speciality and now I’m freaking out with the iguana! I just want her to thrive and be happy.

i agree with Really a big iguana will tear fancy leaves and such apart. Arokh is starting to do that to his cage. its so that i need to rearrange leaves every day. but it sure does look nice!Arokhs cage pics are a little old but only his bowls and stuff have changed, i still (for now) have his plants the same.

For my big boy i just gave him a whole bedroom with shelves and such with very minimal decorating for practical purposes, and only in places where he wont rip them part.
