I think it’s time for a new tortoise thread

penelope is perfect (as you know). she has gained eight grams. her shell is still the same size, but her legs are longer. she can climb up onto the edge around her half of the cage without turning herself over now. she has little spikes on her rear end i swear weren’t there before--now i know where the "spur-thighed" in spur-thighed african tortoise comes from.

she’s gotten to be a great little eater. she actually voluntarily eats grass during her morning graze now. i spent some time chopping it up and mixing it with flowers for her supper, until she got so good at picking all the yellow out and leaving nearly all the grass. then i had to be hard-hearted and feed her just grass. sometimes she walks away from it--she has grass and marigolds tonight but doesn’t seem interested--most of the time now she eats it, so i’ve gone back to giving her some flowers. it’s so hot there aren’t many dandelions to be found, but she really loves borage (an herb) flowers. she also likes bachelor’s buttons and coreopsis, marigolds sometimes, doesn’t think much of sunflower petals or nasturtiums. i ordered her a grass seed mix from the turtle cafe that still hasn’t sprouted at all. i replanted in a cooler area today. meanwhile, we have about four kinds of grass around here. she’s still allowed to pick her own foods for her morning graze. she goes for dichondra, chickweed, dandelion and some oxalis (which i limit). her favorite-the blue field madder-is dried up for the summer, apparently. i figure that’s okay; if she were in africa, her available diet would change with the seasons.

so, boring for the non-tort people, but i need to brag about her now and again. she’s five months old now, bright-eyed and friendly, and positively gorgeous:

so, milan (you found the little turtle, right?), mich, and any other turtle moms, let’s have a progress report!

She is absolutely gorgeous! I miss zinder like crazy everytime I see her sweet little face! I really had to put my willpower to work at the last reptile show where they had baby sulcatas (about twice as big as zinder was) for $60. I paid $160 for him!!! If joe hadn’t already filled my tort table with his retched forest hinge back (most boring tortoise ever) my willpower prob would not have won. And yes it was me with the little terrapin. Who is doing great by the way. He has doubled in size in the past month and a half and eats like a piggy!! He’s growing do fast I fear that 55 gallon won’t last much longer! I am having a heck of a time getting pics of him tonight but here is what I’ve gotten so far.

And these are his fishy friends.. Until he’s big enough to notice he can eat them lol

And I guess since its on topic this is joes silly tortoise. He came to us with and RI and mites and is most likely WC... But when joe wants something there is no stoping him lol. (he’s actually online looking at tattoos right now which means yay were going to be getting some new ink soon. I have got the most awesome design picked out. You guys will love it but I’m not spoiling the surprise!!

This tortoise has been more trouble then he’s worth lol. He just hides all day (which is normal for the species) but gosh he is boring lol.

I have two map turtles.... I’m actually looking to rehome them. Now that I’ve rescued Miss Ella I don’t have the time nor the room for them =/ Hopefully I find them a good home soon.

My husband loves turtles and if you lived close I’d be raising my hand to get your little maps for him!

Milan, I’m so happy to hear that the little terrapin is doing well! Sorry about the "boring" tortoise. Maybe he just needs love to open up? Try to be more forgiving!

Jesse, Penelope looks wonderful! Her shell is still so perfectly smooth!

Here is the most recent picture of Ricochet. We were having pictures done of Mike and Starbuck and Ric walked up and joined the picture and made it very special.

I would love to have a giant tortoise like that. Someday. I used to work at a family owned pet shop and we had two African Spurred Tortoises. They were HUGE. Last time I saw them, which was almost a year ago, they weighed 60-80 pounds each.

They are all georgeous and I love how Ric made the photosession so special.

I just noticed today that my local pet shop have tiny baby sulcatas for sale but since I live in an apartment without a garden I better not buy one lol - but boy are they cute!!

great action shot of your terrapin, milan! if he ever got named i forgot what it was... i agree with susan; give the new tortoise some time. i’d be bored with penelope (really all she does is sunbathe and nap, often simultaneously) if i didn’t take her out to graze for an hour every day. that’s when i get to watch her and interact with her.

i called susan right after i got home from the expo where i bought penelope. she wasn’t home, but mike was. it was the first time i’d ever spoken with him. he asked me if i knew how big she was going to get and i said, yeah, about 50 pounds... imagine my surprise when he gently informed me of the truth!

thanks susan, for noticing her perfect shell--you know how important that is to me. i think putting her (mostly) in charge of her own diet is the smartest thing i could have done. she knows what she needs. i think it’s wonderful that you have all these pics of your family. i never had a family, so i don’t have any of those, but i think it’s so important to be able to look back. mike, starbuck and ricochet all look great.

so we still need to hear from mich; any others?

Oh no Chris the turtle swims and eats fish and the tortoise does NOTHING haha. I don’t actually hate joes tortoise but I do feel some sort of feelings towards it because he ISN’T zinder and joe got him so soon after zinder passed(he got him the same day we it Levi) but I’m not sure if I can ever feel the same for any tortoise as I did with zinder. But I sure Love speedy ( that’s the terrapins name Jesse haha) but I think its because he isn’t a tortoise and though most people don’t know the difference between the two it makes a difference to me. Idk I guess I’m just bitter at joe an his tortoise because it was too soon and it is no where near as cute as my little boy was... And it’s head looks too much like a wiener (and not the oscar meyer kind either) hahahaha

hahahahaha!!! i had to go back and look at its head! what a meanie you are! i’d say you and the bf have something in common:

hmmm, sounds kind of familiar.

you don’t know; the wretched tortoise could turn out ok, though i do understand about him just taking over little zinder’s table. i felt the same way when sylvester killed donatello too, and i replaced him IMMEDIATELY with this equally adorable little green that i found out i had to teach myself to like. i was actually mad at him for not being donatello too! now the pics of ’tello too are in their own little folder on my computer and little elvis donatello is being allowed to become his own separate little personality.

lol you guys really need to see it when he has his head ALL the way out lol...everyone who sees it agrees it does not look normal haha! He actually has gotten a little more inquisitive compared to what he first was. i can at least move around the table without him sticking his wiener head all the way in his shell BAHAHAHA! i guess as far as tortoises go he really isnt very demanding, but i still want my Zinder back and Zinder he will never be...but i guess he IS growing on me since I AM the one who actually takes care of him 99% of the time (me and joe need to have a talk about sharing the responsibilities...especially when he brings home almost as many animals as me lol!) and i also got some new fishy friends for Speedy today, they are acclimating right now. they are the larger mollies, 2 lyrtails and 2 sailfins (i think! we couldnt figure out what kind they were at work since they wernt labled when they came in lol) so now he will have a whole bunch of friends until he gets bigger...then he will have a whole bunch of food haha!

Don’t the fish carry parasites...and produce more by ingesting Speedy’s and the cycle continues until there is a huge parasite bloom??

I was always told not to feed live pet store fish to my water dragon for this reason...so I always bought frozen and thawed them out. Whatever , just curious to know...maybe turtles are different.

They are cute wish I had more room.

Normally I would agree but not only is Susan right and they need fish. But I work at a petstore an personally care for our fish and know what distributor they come from so I feel safe having our fish in there with him. We don’t even keep our feeder fish in the poor cramped disease ridden conditions the larger chain petstores usually do ( I would never buy fish from the petco I used to work at as a groomer. It was horrible!) but enough about speedy and Willie (I decided that’s joes tortoises name if he likes it or not lol or maybe Johnson or Peter would be better aha) we need I hear more about princess Penelope!!

My little tort is doing well, finally getting some warm summer sun and natural UV. I’m actually on the hunt for a male sub-adult leopard tort but they are sooo hard to come by where I live. I’ve found in the US but apparently it’s illegal to ship to Canada no matter what docs you try to fill out :( I’m making loose plans to add a turtle to the collection as well (after the breeding season madness is over!!) :) On the days that are too cool for outdoors she gets to prowl around my lizard room or sunroom for a few hours a day and she still puts the run on my kitties and iguana lmao

cheap garden fence makes the perfect temp outdoor enclosure for the low cost of about $10 lol

isn’t that funny! flowers are "sulcata candy"--they love them. dandelions were penelope’s favorites till the heat killed them, but i mix all sorts of flowers with her evening grass: mallow, marigolds, bachelor’s buttons, borage and field coreopsis so far--as other things bloom in my flower garden and i research them, i’ll add them.

i had to take the pan of real grass out--i gave it light and everything, but it doesn’t fare very well in the cage. maybe it’s just being tromped on. i planted a second pan and i figure i can keep two and switch them out when one get raggedy while the other recovers in the grow room.
