Question.... Okay, So I plan on getting big tree limbs to put in Ella’s cage. Like from outside. Now, what do I need to do to the tree limbs in order to kill any bugs or parasites that may be on them? Hopefully it’s something quick and easy bc I plan on having her in her new cage Saturday night and I’m going around 3pm to get the tree limbs. And even though I will be putting tree limbs (wrapped with twine so she can grip them easier) in her cage, should I still put ladders from one shelf to the other? Or would the tree limbs suffice? Maybe I will just have to see how she does with the tree limbs... I’m thinking of just doing both anyway though... Hmm...
The day I finish her cage is getting so close! I can’t wait!!

Question.... I use tree limbs from outside my guys love climbing on them. The easiest way for me to sanitize them is by popping them in te oven for a few hours. You can also soak in a bleach solution but then you need to make sure they are completely dry and no bleach smell before using them

Question.... I don’t know how well either one of those methods will work. The limbs will need to be like 6 feet long lol. I don’t have an oven big enough. So, maybe I will just pour some bleach water over them and rinse them off real well. I have one ladder done. Halfway done with the second one. I’ll post a picture of them when I’m done. My fingers reeeeally hurt lol (from braiding the ladders)

Question.... Here’s the ladders I just spent 3 hours braiding lol

Hopefully she’s able to climb them! I’m going to secure them to each shelf so they are taunt and don’t move around too much... Guess we’ll see! haha

Question.... I also have fairly big ones in both of my cages and the bath tube or the oven method was just out of the question.
I made sure the bark was all off and then I laid mine across 2 saw horses and rubbed bleach on them with a stiff brush. Then they were allowed to sun dry the rest of the day and into the cage they went. Shortly after, they got wrapped with rope to help with the climb and descent.

Question.... Thanks, Lloydene. That’s what I had planned on doing. So the bark needs to be taken off then? I guess mites can hide in there... Okie doke. So much work to do in one day lol

Question.... Where do you live? If it is really sunny and hot out you could always take them outside and use a water bleach solution to disinfect and then rinse it off a few times and let it dry completely in the sun. If it was me I would let it dry completely and then rinse again and repeat the dry process to ensure all the bleach is gone :) and I would definitely take the bark off. Sounds like you are going to have an awesome iguana home!!

Question.... Rinsing and rinsing and rinsing is not going to matter if left in the sun until dry after applying the bleach. It does not go that far into the limbs/log and the sun takes care of any of the chemicals that most are afraid of as they tend to just sit on the top and the sun bakes them out.
Just saying.. You can do what you want to make you feel better about the situation and there is nothing wrong with that.. Many do.
Just giving the option that it is not necessary to do so.
Nice thing about the bleach is that it will blond up your logs with little effort..

Question.... So, what do you think about the ladders? Do you think she’ll be able to climb those with some of her toe nails missing? A friend of mine has tree limbs for me, hopefully they are the size I need. I’ll be doing a bleach, dawn and water solution and scrubbing them after I take the bark off. Then rinsing them with just bleach and water. Can’t wait to get started tomorrow!

Question.... i think the ladders look good. if they’ll be taut, i think she’ll do well with them. as long as it isn’t too crowded, i’d go with the ladders and branches both. too bad you’re not in texas. we have crape myrtles. their wood is smooth and their bark peels off like paper. non-toxic, too! i use them for bird perches--no worries about chewing.
oh, and two of martie’s front claws on her right foot are starting to grow back! just when she’s gotten accustomed to compensating, of course.

Question.... Thanks. Yeah, I’m not quite sure yet how I will fasten them to the shelves but I’ll figure it out lol. But yeah, I will get them as tight as I can so they don’t move around. I don’t think it’ll be too crowded to put both. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get any branches now though =/ I’m going to go take a drive (hopefully) saturday morning to look for any fallen limbs from a storm we had today. Hopefully I can find something for her!
