First of all a 5.0 is not enough UVB , secondly the small area of UVB from a coil lamp is minuscule, minute negligible. Third if these are used and you see any signs of eyes constantly closing it’s because it is emitting UVB in the wavelength that is causing damage to the eyes. Remove it ASAP if lack of activity / appetite or constant closing of the eyes occur. Get an Arcadia160 watt UVB metal halide/ mecury vapor...or short MVB. Arcadia Even the 12% T8 or T5 lamps are better than the coil that you have...look at the catalog and find a dealer near you...e mail them if you have too. Dr Frances Baines in the UK researches all UVB lamps and I can link you to the site or you can join UVB meter owners group on yahoo groups and read all the archives and latest news...

They are more expensive BUT you only need one fixture because it is heat/UVB/UVA ( well and another for a CHE for nightime heat) and they usually produce UVB longer to. That alone makes them worth the extra money. And Chris you got me thinking when you said metal halides. I wonder if I can use MVBs on my reef tank? I am looking to upgrade and lighting will be a big issue for an 8 foot tank but I am so for hanging pendent fixtures with MVBs if that’ll work. I really don’t want to spend another $1500 on a second 4 foot fixture if I can avoid it lol. Sorry to kinda steal this thread but now I’m curious haha

You need to supply a fixture that looks like the fixture from any retail store ...Costco is a great example of the lights inside that hang from the ceiling. Those are typically 250 or 400 watt metal halide But any lamp and ballast combination can be used. Search CL and get a fixture or 2 ....we’ll hook you up and teach you how to wire it properly with video....EZ PZ

They can and will tear open the screen!!! I left Levi bedroom window cracked and I mean cracked and he managed to squeeze under and claw open the screen, jump out a 2nd story window and was missing for 2 days! I am very lucky I found him so please if you have an open window keep VERY close eyes on him so you don’t loose him. And Chris idk yet what I’m going with yet. Most likely 4-6 250s. I need to get the tank set up first. I just found out my stores owner has a 300 gallon tank sitting at the wear house so I need to talk with him about possibly doing a payroll deduction so I can bring that monster home lol. Once I have the tank and stand then I will have to worry about lighting. I wish I could build an LED fixture but me and electricity do not mix well haha.

#2274479 Tempestborn View Profile	Message To: Curt1994   In reference to Message Id: 2274454  Just bought a 26w UVB Coil bulb 5.0 kudos to you curt, for caring enough to get a proper uvb. i use some mvb’s and some tubes; both work. real sun is wonderful, if you have at least an hour every day to let them be out, but uvb is just too vital to take the risk of not having a bulb indoors as well. i dream of outdoor cages for everyone, but i don’t know if it’ll ever happen. jesse

Even at the window, screen UVB from the sun will be cut 50% ...as Milan said be very careful...make sure you watch him and stay close so if he wants to scamper off you know where he is....Better yet create a log branch or basking shelf just for him about 2 feet higher than your head. He will not be afraid at that height and usually stay put for quite some time. Remember glass cuts the uvb to 0 ...screen will cut by 1/2 (50%) so if it is cloudy he will get very little. Best time for basking in the sun is 9 am - 11am...then 3-6 pm or so ....your iggy will let you know for sure.
