 Green Iguanas

Hi I got a green iguana hatchling from petco and I have had him for about 2 months and I was wondering when will he shed for the 1st time? I’m worried about him.

He will shed in many pieces ...when you have fed him and he has grown....maybe the head area first, jaw and dewlap.. or the belly and legs, then the tail and eventually the spikes. make sure you mist often during these weeks and keep the humidity up....don’t want the old skin staying on at all , it cuts the circulation to the new skin and toe nails can get deformed / spikes ...etc. they fall of if constricted after many weeks. usually for the tip of the tail and toe areas I will use some olive oil to coat the area and wait a day ...massaging the old skin until it comes off easily.I will spend 10 minutes or more per day grooming my iggy if it has some stuck shed, as long as it comes off very easily I will remove it for her...any strong resistance and I wait ANOTHER DAY OR 2 AND TRY AGAIN. gentle and easy is the key.

what are you feeding it??

strawberries, turnip greens, collad greens, grapes, and mangos just a little bit of each since he is only 10 in long.

not a terrible diet, but you can do a lot better. go here to learn more about food: Link

then read the new iguana owners’ thread at the top of this forum; it has a great recipe for "iggy salad."

shedding means they’re growing, so if you’ve had this one for that long and it hasn’t shed, it either isn’t eating right or enough. i feed my hatchlings twice a day and right now they shed every few weeks.
