 Face rubbing

Ugh I’m getting so frustrated with this. Does anyone know a way to stop face rubbing. This is the 6th time Levi has ripped his face open on the bottom of his bedroom door! I have to put neosporin on him almost every day now. It’s been happening for about 2 months. I know face rubbing is usually caused from too small cages. But he has a WHOLE ROOM to himself. I got one of those draft guards for under the door thinking that would stop it but he just rips it off somehow and slides his nose back and forth under the door. I understand he misses me while I’m at work but I see no reason for him to harm himself over it. It only ever happens when I’m gone too. So maybe that actually is the reason. But jeeze I can’t take him everywhere with me especially to the grooming salon with all kinds of dogs running around. Can I put one of the little round band aids on his boo boo so it can actually heal before he rips it open again? I’m out of ideas but I hate coming home and seeing my baby all bloody! Also incase this is important it doesn’t seem to hurt him at all. I rub it with a cotton ball I clean it then apply the neo an he just closes his eyes and lifts his head as if I was just petting him. I’ve heard of Velcro birds and dogs but a Velcro iguana? Ugh

Well the only thing I could think of is cover a good portion of the bottom half of the door with a super soft blanket like.. staple it to the door? I know that sometimes glass confuses reptiles which is another reason for face rubbing but it’s a door so glass isn’t the issue.... maybe he’s anxious? I heard sometimes a radio or TV helps with that with dogs but no clue with iguanas I guess it would be worth a shot maybe? not sure about the bandaids though I’m glad I’ve never gone through snout rub with any of my guys fingers cross but good luck I hope you can find a solution to it.

ew. i have used liquid bandage with some limited success. i would try the little round one (my opinion only).

usually there is some depth between a door and its frame. a child-guard gate fits there; i use one when i open the back door for a crossbreeze. i don’t think anything put onto the door is going to work, though i wouldn’t let that stop me from trying to hot glue a couple layers of fleece. you’d have to to it so a few inches (maybe a foot, if he tears things off?) went up the side of the door and another inch folded under, so that corner made by the edge of the door is completely covered.

i think the key is to make it so he can’t reach the door. donatello used to do the same thing in the rubbermaid box he was living in before he came to me. his nostrils were completely deformed from it, and he didn’t seem to even feel it. it kind of explains why igunans can’t tell when they’re being burned by a heat rock ("tello had scars from that, too). anyway, a child gate sits right on the floor without any gap at all. it could be your solution. make sure you put it close enough to the door so levi can’t climb it and get stuck in between.

i’m sure it’s nice to know he loves you, but sure not a good way of showing it.

so would i, but hot glue holds better than staples and is way less dangerous.

I think I’m going to try the liquid bandage first. That seems like it will hold better in high humidity then a bandaid. Thanks Jesse I forgot all about the stuff. So far he hasn’t reopened it and it has scabbed over nicely. But it’s going to take a lot of sheds to make his face look normal again. Poor baby it’s right on the top of his nose. I’m going to screw that draft guard into the door today and hopefully thatll will hold.

IMO.. I would not put anything on it if you have gotten her to the point of where she is not doing it anymore. These guy’s skin is not like us humans, and our antibiotic creams do very little for things like this. Just kinda makes you feel better. That can be an ok thing as long as they can not injest any of this as Iguana’s don’t lick their skin like a dog or cat would. On snout..constant ingestion.. Put something on the front of it and there they go.. Constant tongue flick..
Sorry,, Just my point of view.
I have had the snout rub from my big female when in season and it can be quite exasperating.. As long as the cage is clean and she stops rubbing it will heal well all by itself.
Doesn’t take couple of sheds to get rid of either.. Once healed, it all comes back together rather quickly.

I’m not too worried about him tounge flicking anything because it isn’t in the front in his face. It is up by where a horn would be if he had one. He did have a tiny one but that is bye bye since he rubbed his face open

That is good to know.. IMO I still would not put anything on it as long as you know the cage is clean, which I am sure, knowing by your posts, that you do..
Just like us humans, if you keep a bandaid on a cut forever it stay’s soft and doesn’t scab up. Scabbing means the healing process is in effect and in my opinion if the cage is clean, scab in process is a good thing. Scab falls off, healing done..
IMO the only time these guy’s will get an infection from something like this is if living conditons are not good.
