Top of his head is really dark..HELP!

Zane is my 1 year old green Iguana. He eats fresh collard and mustard greens everyday. Has a pool of water in his enclosure that he can completely submerge in. Also a drinking container of water. He has branches to climb on and a basking area with UVA and UVB lighting. This shed seems to be taking forever...but it is the first I’ve ever witnessed....

So when I noticed that the entire layer of skin was just resting on top of his head I gently pushed it off with my finger and it came off with no resistance at all. And this is what the top of his head looked like! I just think thats really dark...is that normal? Am I doing something wrong? I feel like I always have a million questions but I just want to get experienced Iguana owners take on this.

Is it always like that? I’ve noticed Taz’s is like that sometimes. particularly if he is cold or stressed. When he’s really warmed up it turns white. Can you post more pictures?

Sorry it took so long to get another photo...it doesn’t look AS dark anymore...but its still a lot darker than it was before his layer of skin came off...

And to help with shedding I just applied some mineral oil where there was still skin hanging.

Does anybody know if peeling their skin for them hurts them? I’m not saying taking off entire strips that haven’t even lifted, just pieces that are hanging.

Another question, this evening I was using a towel and running down his spikes and he kept arching his body (exactly like how a cat would as you pet their body from head to tail) is that normal? Does anybody else’s iguana like that? Just curious on how to pet him in a way that feels good for him!

I don’t think his head looks bad at all. As far as hurting them to remove shed, no if it is hanging it doesn’t hurt. If it is stuck and you pull, then yes, that hurts.

The arching can mean several things. Igs arch when they are threatened, but if what you were doing felt good he may have been trying to lean into it, so it is hard to say without seeing it happen.
