He is a She.....what do I do about the egg laying

I came home today to find that my"male"ig had layed several eggs. This is the first time she has layed and I dont know what to do. How often will she lay? What are alterantives to spaying? Do I need to feed her any specail supplements? For those of you who have responded to me befor...I’m the one who asked about my ig’s recovering from MBD and what I could do to help that process. As far as that is going she seems to be improving. Thanks.

Oh yes, eggs will take a toll on her if she has MBD. Give her plenty of calicum and make sure she gets plenty of UVB rays. Go to MK’s site to read about an egg laying box (I posted that link on a question last week to Replady I believe). Keep an eye on her to make sure she lays them and doesn’t have any problems (sometimes eggs can burst inside them and that is an emergency situation that needs vet attention immediately.

She may lay yearly or not. I know igs that never lay. As long as she lays well, there is no problem but you need for her to stay healthy.

Those are very good questions and I have no specific answers since I have males! However, I would just use your best judgement. Set up the proper laying box for one...this may inspire her to lay more. If she seems sickly or lethargic or you notice anything odd coming out of her vent, she may have a broken egg. Many igs lay without problems though so don’t be alarmed....just be watchful.

Good luck and keep us posted.
