How much and how often ?

I have adopted a 1 yr old iggy and when I first got him he would hardly eat anything and now he eats like a little piggy . Each week I give him a different kind of salad . This week it has been squash , zucchini , red peppers , green beans , peas and a little apple . All mixed in together . I was wondering about how much is a normal amount for him to consume in a day . He is about 20 - 21 inches including tail .

Also I was wondering how often they would normally shed . I know they do when they are growing but just curious what is a norm ? I am also new to having these guys and learning as I go . I have done alot of reading on them and haven’t found answers to these 2 questions . If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it . Thank you !

Are you feeding greens as the staple of your salad? If not, make mustard, collard, & turnip greens the basis for your feeding and add your "salad". Watercress and dandelion are also good to mix in.

Shedding is a good sign, but be sure your ig has the proper greens, temps, and UV to grow up healthy. Young igs shed very often, so don’t let that alarm you.. I don’t know what the general size is at that age, as I don’t have green iguanas. Hopefully someone else can help you with that.

Basically, provide the basics. Proper size enclosure, proper lighting, humidity, and a diet based on good leafy greens.

Thank you for helping me out here . I was wondering on the shedding cause it seems like once he is done he starts all over again . I have been putting dandilions in his " salad " also He seems to be doing good now .

I have a good enclosure for him and keep an eye on the temps , UVB , humidity etc ...

Then is sounds like you’re good to go with him. Just go slow with the socialization, and eventually he’ll be your best friend.

I try to socialize him as much as he will tolerate . There are times he clearly as others might have experienced he does not want to be bothered . I think he was abused before I got him so I trying to earn his trust slowly and try not to stress him out too much . I would love to be able o hold him all the time right now but I know he needs time to adjust to me and learning I not going to eat him and I am more interested in feeding him then feeding on him . I have a great deal of respect for this lil guy and just want to do right by him and make sure he is happy and healthy .

Iguanas know when they are full, they will only eat as much as they can. I usually feed Iggy around 11 or 12. As for handling him, handle him as much as you can. If he bites you, pick him up anyway. If you don’t he will think that if he just bites you, you won’t pick him up. You’ve basically got to show them who is boss. Need any other help?? Here is my Iggy.

sounds like your ig is the right size for his age.shedding takes place like, every time you turn around when they’re growing. mine is a 3 years and a few months old, and her shedding has slowed down a bit now. shes 48 inches nose to tail.

Thank you all for your input on this .

I know there are times I pick him up and he REALLY wants to be left alone and will try to eithe whip me or bite and I don’t just leave him alone when he does that cause that would be positive reinforsement and don’t want him to have that when he is trying to bite . He tries to run from me ...... but eventually I do get him . he is my buddy once he is out of his enclosure and then I usually have to pry him off me to get him to go back in .
