 My Iguana is miserable...

Magellan is so miserable, I don’t know what to do for him. I had problems with his shedding. Apparently spraying water from a water bottle doesnt seem to help shedding like I have read on other sites. Perhaps my house is a little dryer then those instructions were meant for. Seems bathing didnt really do the trick. Especially with the spikes, which started looking abnormal.

So after a couple of weeks of getting his skin moist and some humidity for 20 minutes and day 2-3 times a week. He is now shedding unbelievably. So much that he is having a hard time sleeping. The fortunate thing is, at this rate he will be done shedding soon, spikes and all.

Just thought I would post this in case others have the same problems getting their iguana to shed using some of the methods such as spraying 4 times a day and baths. Especially for free roaming Iguanas.

be cool

 Re: My Iguana is miserable...

When I first got Gizmo she had a lot of retained shed on her spikes and tail. Soaking in the tub is some help but she only wants to stay in for 15-30 minutes so it’s not like you can just go nuts with that.

I found she likes the "spa treatment" of being wrapped in warm damp towels. Gizmo the Grape, Empress of Everything is sooooo spoiled.

We want to see more photos...

of her and Amazon!!Sir Amazon must be big now!

Ariel is replacing Kenya in my heart. Both have the same age and size.I could even pretend Kenya is not dead and show photos of Ariel. But as you said im too honest to do that. The only difference is the color of the skin. Ariel is very light green (like Zombie) and Kenya was dark green with brown spots.Ariel’s skin is rough and Kenya’s skin was too silky. Incredibly silky.Does that mean something?

Re: We want to see more photos...

Not that I know of. Iguanas come from such a wide range of areas throughout Central and South America that they are all different shapes and sizes, colors and textures, much like we humans are.

Amazon is still growing very slowly since the tail drop in August and is small for his age but seems to be doing fine otherwise. The regrown tail is beginning to lose its dark black shine and regain normal scale texture. It’s more brown than black now. It seems his growing energy is still being put into regenerating that tail so I’m not too very worried his overall growth is slow.

Yes, you’re right, I haven’t taken new pictures for several weeks! It’s been very gray and rainy here and I don’t keep many lights in my house because I’m already running so many reptile heat lamps.

When the sun shines again I can take many more pictures.

I’ve heard of some people using aloe gel to help their iguana shed, but I’ve always had decent luck with the humidity here in FL. Ultrasonic humidifiers work pretty well from what I understand.

Amazon lost so much of himself it wasn’t funny. He went from 14 inches down to 5 5/8 and still isn’t quite back to 14 inches although he’s pretty close. But his legs and torso are filling out, his head is getting broader and he’s grown those cute little horns so I can see that he’s not stuck at iglet size, he’s just growing slow and steady.

Considering he was a rescue with backbone problems I’m just thrilled with how he’s doing and if he stays pocket sized then that’s okay with me.

You think amazon will be confident enough to make some good jumps? Did the tail breaking affect that? I know it took magellan a bit to figure out the balance thing.
