 Injured Iguana ):

so i just got home from work to find my dogs got my iguana...I’m so worried and i don’t know what to do for her right now....iv called around to 4 different vets and not one will see her right now till tomorrow afternoon...i got home both my dogs were locked in my room and stuck under my bed and unable to get out cause thats where my iguana ran when she broke out of her cage....i don’t see any marks on her what so ever but she isn’t acting right....she is moving her head side to size kinda funny like she has little control of it and not really moving much else....she does try to walk and stuff but i can tell shes in pain....my poor girl I’m sitting here in tears about this....i don’t normally have the dogs here but my b.f is moving and brought them over and locked them in my room while he finished moving...i had no clue they ever was over...I’m so mad at him right now.....but my question is ...is there anything i Can do to make her more comfortable till tomorrow afternoon when i can take her in? i have her on her heat pad covered up...she did eat for me so i think that’s a good thing but her head movement makes me thing she might have some serious damage...i just don’t know...its really making me stress.

Oh wow that has to be scary. Check her eyes. are her pupils reacting normal and are they equal? keep watching for discharge from her eyes nose ears mouth and under her tail vent area. listen to her breath and if you hear raspy sounds or the other above stuff is not normal I would take her in to an emergency vet. I would not wait tell 2morrow afternoon go there first thing in the morning. a lot of times they have cancellations and will get you in sooner. I have had to go and plant myself at the vets office until they saw me sooner than they said. A good vet wont turn you down. Good luck and I hope everything will be o.k :)you can message me if you have any other questions.

I agree....you have to stress it is an emergency and go in there and show them. They will probably take her in and see her. I’m sorry to say if she is acting that badly, she may need to be euthanized. If you don’t have an emergency vet around, then you have to wait until tomorrow morning I guess. If she is in pain, maybe she will pass during the night. I am so sorry you are going through this, it is really horrible. There is always a chance she is just in shock or something but I would prepare youself for internal injuries or a broken spine/back/etc.

thanks guys...i did find a vet to take her 1st thing in the am he said just come in at 7am and i will be his 1st person i have been watching her i don’t see any discharge from her eyes nose ears mouth or anything else...shes just kinda sitting....i was checking her over more a bit ago and was feeling around her legs and arms and what not...she seems a bit sensitive around the right side of her rib cage...I’m thinking maybe she got stepped on and maybe its just a broken or bruised rib but i just don’t know...she went down and ate some greens so shes moving better but still not right.....i just checked her eyes like someone just said and they both look the same nothing different then they normally are...she seems to be resting now all stretched out on her pad with her light,i just covered the cage to make her feel comfortable...i just don’t know....but ill post and let you all know what the vet ells me tomorrow morning....the b.f just came over and took the dogs back to the new house so no more dogs here now....anyways...tanks again everyone

oh and i did try and find an emergence vet to take her and the ones i found said they don’t know about Iggy’s or only do cats and dogs....so i called my friends pet store and she gave me a number of the vet she takes all hers to.

it is just clear and not a lot just a dribble it might be something normal and I’m just freaking myself out about that part because someone said to watch for something(I’m even stressing about her eyes now...keep thinking they are bulging out at time but then go back in,that’s really got me a mess but i don’t know if iv just been looking at her every move too long)...but it had no color at all look like water and it was just a tiny bit...iv been staring at her most the night....I’m gonna take one last look and get some sleep(i said that 3 times already).
oh and thank you that kinda made me feel a little better now that i know it might not be anything(the nose drip i mean) and now i can maybe get some sleep and just hope for the best in the morning....I’m terrified I’m gonna wake up and shes gonna be gone

They are so much more than lizards. They become members of the family and have wonderful personalities. Hang in there and don’t let the vets office make you feel bad about calling you are paying for there time and they have your baby there. Sometimes I have found that vets get cold and clinical because they get burnt out (it’s a job) attitude. They forget why they became vets. Hope everything is going to be o.k. we are thinking about you and your sweetie.

 Injured Iguana ):

ok...so she is still in the vet ,he wanted to keep her over night and take more blood test and he also did ex-rays...it turns out that my dogs didn’t get her at all....he saw no signs of broken bones or anything along that line...but when he did the ex-rays he saw something very strange....2 pieces of metal that she must have got when she sneaked out of her cage....so my 1st thought was hes gonna cut her open and remove them but he told me he thinks it will pass...that makes me worry because i would feel better if he took them out...he said they haven’t moved from last night....i just don’t understand if this is right...i mean i know hes a vet and knows what hes doing but wouldn’t you think he would wanna remove them metal parts??he told me other then that shes perfectly healthy...he checked for internal parasites and bone daises and said all that looked great...and that made me feel great because of the condition she was in when i got her.....i worked so hard to get her as fat and healthy as she is today....and she don’t even look that fat.....but very said shes a Little dehydrated so hes been pumping her full of liquids and he said she looks better...I’m at all worried about this tho...is it normal for then not to wanna take something like that out? i dunno....he didn’t seem concerned at all about it and wants me to pick her up at 4:00 today ...ill let you guys know...thanks again.

Is he a herp vet or regualar cat and dog type vet? if he’s a herp vet than he probably is right, and whatever your ig swallowed might be so small and not sharp so it can pass.
the thing that concerns me is that you mentioned an odd behavior with your iguana, like moving of his head abnormally. if it’s been in his system longer than you thought, could there be a possibility of heavy metal poisoning? i don’t want to scare you, but it’s a thought to mention to the vet. what did he attribute the behavior/head movement too?
if his answers aren’t satisfying you, trust your gut and seek out another vet. make sure they are a vet who specializes in herps. good luck; i hope it’s all okay!

Ask if you can see the x-rays. I’m not a vet so I can only offer an opinion...if the objects don’t look sharp and they are small, she can probably pass them, but if they are too big, it seems like he should operate to remove them. My last iguana ate everything in sight. He passed a lot of it, but some things he did not and they found them in his stomach after he died and I had a necropsy done. He was 5ft but couldn’t pass a penny, some rocks, nor a 6" rubber toy. I never saw him eat any of these of course and I wish I would have had an xray regularly since he was the type to ingest anything and everything.

Is your vet good with reptiles? Does he have a lot of experience. I think those objects stuck in my last ig’s belly could have lead to a low grade infection which eventually contributed to his demise. You will have to check the stool everyday until you see those items if you do not get the operation. They are not okay to stay in there for an extended time period.

The fact that your ig is acting so poorly is a bad sign to me. My iguana did not even act like anything was wrong the entire time he had those objects in his belly. To me that is a sign that she is not feeling well at all so something is going on that needs to be fixed. I would seek another opinion after you look at the x-rays if you are not happy with the answers you get.

yes he is a reptile vet...i had a very hard time finding one so i called my friend(her and her hubby own a pet store ,they are old family friends) and she gave me this number and said hes the best in town and that’s the vet she recommends to everyone she deals with....i did ask him about the odd head movement and he said it could be just shock...he told me she is acting ,much better now that shes got some fluids in her....he said he will talk more with me when i go in today at 4:00....he also said her odd movement could be from not being in a heated area for that long(or something along that line i was 1/2 asleep when he called)...my house can be kinda cold at time and she was stuck under the bed with my dogs so i don’t know...ill post and let you all know right when i get home from the vet,I’m off right now to fix her cage so she cant get out....for anyone that uses them mesh cages recommended for Iggy’s and water dragons...don’t use them! they suck....vet even told me that....that was the 1st thing he said...well that and do i let her roam free....and i have been doing that a little bit only because i read that so many of you do it with no issues at all...so i thought if i kept my floor picked up and vacuum everyday she would be fine...but i guess i missed something and she ate it...i was always told its not good to let things like that roam free i should have listened its all my fault this has happened to her...she hates being in her cage now so when i do lock her up she gets out at times...well lesson well learned on my part....and just so you all know I’m having a Iggy cage built soon so this never happens again...she will only be out when I’m watching her... anyways...thanks everyone ill post back in a few hours I’m gonna take a nap iv been moving all week and still gotta do a lot more after i pick up my Iggy(unless i can get out of it)....take care all and that for your support

oh and to the comment about "kill the dog" my dogs are very precious to me and that offends me...i would never cause any harm to any living animal...only f’ed up people with head issues do or think things like that..so please keep comment like that to yourself...i didn’t come asking for help to see responses like that, everyone else you have been so helpful and made me feel better about this whole thing

((last i checked my vet bill was at 300 EKKK))

shes home....the vet said for me to take her home and feed her and watch for her to pass the 2 bits of metal she had...i saw the ex-rays and i have no clue what the bits are...he said they are small and not sharp so they should pass in a few days...she hasn’t eaten in a few days so they said it might be a bit before she does so I’m gonna feed her a lot of her fav stuff....i was waiting in the waiting room and the lady came out with her in her hands and gave her to me,she was ice cold! i never felt her that cold every....lady said she wouldn’t stay on the heat pad and kept going on the metal bottom part,i guess she was not happy with out her heat pad and pillow she likes to sleep on in her cage....so shes home in her cage(that i fixed) resting now...he told me to call Monday and let him now if shes doing good....ill post with any updates I’m going to get her some goodies now before i go paint the new house...i hate painting.
