Chat room or something

I have met such nice people here is there a chat room or something we can do while we are online. I would be willing to put my Yahoo id out there if anyone else is interested. Once we get a few folks on line talking we could jump over to a private chat and talk iggys, and lizards and what not. Anyone else game?

i think a chat room would be really good, cause if some one needs an answer there and then, its alot easier getting an instant message then having to wait and keep refreshing a thread. Good idea Sammysmom

Hello,

I get asked this a lot and it will eventually be here, but it will be on a per subject basis. However I listed some reasons why forums are more important then chats and why it does not take a top priority compared to writing in other features of the site.

The chat has to be moderated. I have not been to a chat yet that has not have tempers flaring and all kinds of curses and threats fly by on the screen. I have a hard enough time controlling tempers just in the forums.

Someone’s question may be over looked or they may get confused with an answer for someone else’s question.

Third if you ask a question in the forums...thousands of people will read it and may get help from it. If you ask a question in chat room only the people on at that time will see the question and answers. This goes with the messengers idea too. The idea behind having discussion boards and forums is to have your questions answered for thousands of other hobbyists to see and look up by searching. By using chats or messengers you take that away from other hobbyists looking for information. Since a majority of us are here to help others and find information for ourselves, going with a chat system would benefit less people then posting on a forum dicussion board.

When we do get a chat system they will be organized sessions with subject themes at an allocated time.

Just to add something to that:

I have moderated countless chat rooms on IRC and MSN and when it comes to a chat room with a set topic, very rarely, if ever do the chatters stay on topic. Chat rooms that enforce a strict adherence to the room’s topic have a lot of dead air. Because of the above two reasons, most people stop going to the room altogether and it dies. Forums are much better since you read and respond to whatever you choose and you don’t have to be watching all the time to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

the chat room i was speaking of also has many mods in the room to make sure no such behavior happens...unlike AOL or other chat room...that’s one of the reason i like ReptiChat...the people that are breaking the rules are booted after 1 warring...i love it! its a place where we can all talk about reptiles or whatever and its kept clean.

i volunteer to mod for a few hours a day. ive been a mod on other chat lines and i have no problem with it.

This chat sounds like a great idea.

If someone really is serious about trying this out, I can contribute a small botnet to take care of any automated security function such as granting administrative priveleges to moderators, restricting access to banned chatters and removing people who break certain rules.

I know of an unmoderated chatroom(which means you can stray off the original topic without being punnished) and it’s usually empty. Here’s a link to it if anybody wants to check it out. It’s open to anyone, you don’t even need a password. We just need to set a time so we can all be there. Link

Cool... We can use that for the test then. People’s schedules and the timezones they live in won’t make it very practical to actually set a time when everone can be in the room though. KingSnake has a chat thing on the site that is used for information sessions and such. They have the times and dates and topics that will be discussed clearly laid out on the front page. Something like that would be cool.

So, what’s the link to KingSnake’s room? We could use the other chat room I mentioned in the mean time. Your right, a set time wouldn’t work because of time zones. How about we just announce what time we’ll be there and include the time zone and AM/PM. Like I’ll be there at 6:00PM Pacific Time Zone Tomorrow, Wednesday the 8th. Except the people in austrailia may not know that that would be an 8 hour time difference so they’d have to be there at 2:00 AM, and that would actually be Thursday the 9th for them. Ahh! Too confusing!!! Forget that Idea!

Hey turtlebits how long since you were in that chat room? I just went and saw things on my screen that would have been bleeped out of a XXX movie. I dont mind if some one makes a mistake and curses once in a while but oh my...... they were calling each other nasty names using profanity like nothing i have ever seen in a chat room. I dont think I will be going back there ever again. Another thing in there, they were not even talking about reptiles or anything just cussing one another horribly. Bad experience. I was in there this morning and all was well.
