 Need help taming

Well my friend’s sister has a very young iguana, it is 13 inches long so like 2-3 monthes old. I have been trying to tame it by holding it 10-15 minutes a day. When she first got it, it was very tolerant of handling. Now whe you put your hand anywhere near it, it runs from you. So I put my hand by its face and he opened his mouth, so I gave in and let him bite me to show him who is boss. I did this like 5 more times but he keeps doing it. Should i try to do something to bond with it? Or what can i do to tame him, because holdng him 15 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes a day is not working.

If possible, break your 15 minutes down to maybe 5 or 10 minutes, 3+ times a day. Its better to handle them for short periods of time several times a day, instead of one big handling session once a day; they can learn that we dont mean harm faster that way. Also, try not to reach in and "grab" him. They think theyve been picked up by a bird and are a bout to be eaten then. And dont reach down from above them either; they think your hand is a bird looking for a meal. I’m not sure if letting him bite you is good or not; I’ll stay away from that right now. YOu have to remember, though: it can take a YEAR or MORE sometimes to tame an iguana. Dont expect to be best friends with it in a month or two.

I wouldn’t suggest allowing him to bite you ! That is a BAD habit to get them into . Mine tried to bite me once and got a glove I was using at the time and never let go for at least 8 minutes ! I wouldn’t want to see an iguana attached to someone for that long . Heor she may be small now but think about when it is 5-6 feet and goes to bite .

If you’re having "dominance" issues with an ig, I wouldn’t suggest a cage bigger than 6ft high. If he can get much higher than you, that can (not always, but sometimes) make dominance problems worse. Also, letting him bite you doesn’t teach him who is boss--- it shows him that HE is boss. Plus, it can cause you serious damage when he’s older.
