 Uh Oh...Burns?

I noticed today that My Iggy has some patches on his body that are darkened and the scales have become ruff and hard. I was just wondering if his light his burning him. Please get back to me as soon as you can. Thanks.

OK, now they are turning a bright orange. I have no idea what is going on. Is this his breeding colors coming? His arms are completely orange.

Watch to see if they look like scabs. I know my one iggy turns orange a lot. It is usually when she is under her uva/uvb light for a long time basking. then turns almost black when catching rays outside to capture the most heat.

You can put neosporin ( I don’t know how o spell it LOL) on them to be safe. Then just keep your eye on them

Well I think I have the solution...Well he is going into shed and the black parches have now turned gray ans the skin has become loose and started to peel. I guess it was just his skin peeling. But I could be wrong. In this picture, there is a 100 watt MVB and I put one of those cages around the light, he has not access to the bulb so I have no idea how he got burned.

Julius came to us with two thermal burns on his face. What happened, we think, is he poked his nose through the bars of his cage and "bruised" that tissue. Then he got "sunburned" from his bulb. This is all speculation, mind you, but that’s what it looks like. They’re almost completely healed now, and the scars are pink. The vet had us put Thermazene on them until it healed completely.

the heat lamp is a little close. even if there’s a screen over the part where the bulb is, the fixture itself should be kept out of reach too because it also gets very very hot as well. take a good thermometer(not the stick on kind) and place it face up, lying down next to your igs basking area to see how hot it gets. i did this once and found out it was 105 degrees even though the thermometers on the cage wall near her were only reading 95! the orange you described is a sign of breeding season, usually for males but for some, not most, of females too. but the texture of the skin being rough and black sounds like a burn. if it’s shed, i don’t know that it would turn that dark before peeling. keep an eye on it for a week. if it starts to look better, then chances are your ig had a minor burn that coincided w/ his time to shed and it’s healing. if it starts to crust, scab, ooze or anything else like that then consult a herp vet. my ig got burned a few weeks ago, and she had this wierd looking patch of black skin by her head. it healed up now but took a very long time. i had the bulbs too close so i moved her shelves down a bit.

Double check your temps to make sure they aren’t too hot to be on the safe side.

I lowered the wattage of the MVB. I love those bulbs, they seem to make their colors brighter and stand out. That’s just my opinion. But they are fine, I don’t think they are burns. They have turned blue now and his whole body is turning a deep orange.

Well its actually a ZooMed Halogen light. It emmitts 15% more heat and UVA and it has a life span of 3000 hours. A little different, but still great.

The zoomed holgen light is not an MVB light. It doesn’t give off UVB rays.
