What kind of cage substrate do you guys use?

I’m just curious what kind of substrate do you guys use for your iggies. Have you tried more than one? Which one do you think worked best? Right now I’m using cage carpet, the green kind.

I use news paper. They make such a mess with food water and other I clean them all the time. I find it is the easiest and free I get it from someone else who subscribes

In my juvenile ig’s tanks I have a mixture of coconut husk and forest bark and it’s been working great. Both of my juvies are growing very quickly as they eat like horses, have always been in perfect health, and are very happy and active. My adult Ig is in a large custom 4 level enclosure. The ramps and shelves in the enclosure are covered in shelf liner with works well for that type of enclosure too.

Thanks for the responses. My iggy isn’t very messy. I’ll probably start using newspaper because it is easier to clean and change than carpet and it’s alot cheaper lol. What do you guys think about paper shreds? Is it harmful if an iggy digests it?

It’s alot easier to clean and change if you just lay down sheets of paper. Call your newspaper company and ask what type of ink they used. If it is soya based, it’s good. Anything else is bad and should be avoided.

Paper (newspaper, butcher paper, paper towels etc.) are the best. You can also use reptile carpet.

The loose substrates are very risky as iguanas often ingest them and it can cause impaction/blockage or prolapse. My last iguana even ate paper so I couldn’t use any substrate in his cage! He was a freak though...most won’t eat paper.
