Info on iggies QUICK!

| Hey guys I am looking into getting an iggy. I’ve wanted 1 for ever and didn’t rly know much about them. Now I’m giving more an attempt to learn about them and hopefully get 1 at a show in April. So here is my list of questions. How big do they get? How long does it take them to get this big? What size viv can I use for the 1st year? What about the 2nd, and 3rd, or until they are full grown? What do they eat? What temps and humidity do they like? When they get bigger, and I "iggy proof" my room, can she run around my room freely as long as she has everything she needs in tehre and I am POSSATIVE that it is safe for her? That’s it for now guys, thnx a bunch in advance! |

| I’m not trying to be rude, but I think if you have this many questions about an iguana you should look into something else. They are much more difficult to care for than a lot of other lizards. I knew how difficult they were and I adopted one that was being passed around and I question that sometimes. She is a handful and isn’t taming too well at all. Go to the articles section of the site for food charts. They are vegetarians. They get about 6 feet long and need a cage the size of a room basically when they are grown. It can run around your room but you will have a poopy mess more than likely and they climb and knock things over without hesitation. Why do you want one? I’ve seen you post similar posts in several other forums about other lizards. |

I’m getting an iggy to but don’t try and get information QUICK. beacuase if you rush then your probably not going to get the information right. I’ve been readind reaserching and asking questions for a year now and they are the most dumped animal baecause people don’t know how to take care of them or aren’t able to give them what they need so if you really want one then you better learn about them first. and don’t get them at a show it’s better to adopt and if you can’t do that get one at a pet store that REALLY CARES about their reptiles and other animals. they get 5-6 feet long with the proper care, and need BIG cages. go to WWW.greenigsociety.org get the iguanas for dummies by melissa kaplins, and get lots or information on them. and no matter what if you get a green iguana dont feed it animl protien (such as dog/cat food, crickets or other animals) it will kill them GET INFORMATION AND MAKE SURE ITS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| I think what everyone is trying to say is that iguanas are a very big commitment when they are taken care of properly. They live 15-20 years so it is a long term pet. If you are planning on going away to college, this may not be the idea reptile to get because of its huge demand on husbandry. All that aside...Iguanas are one of my favorite reptiles because they have their own personality quirks and are always fascinating to watch. However they do get large and can go from tame to out of contol very quickly. This is especially true during breeding season for a male iguana. Caging...thats a hard one to answer since they like to climb, but also need room to turn around. Basically as large as you have room for providing you can heat the cage properly to give different temperature ranges for cooling to basking. Also the cage should be higher then your normal fish tank. Thats why alot of people choose to build a cage for their iguana. My iguana has never been caged...has been free-roaming since I got him when he was a baby. I don’t recommend free-roaming as a baby like I did. I was just ignorant back then. I think it is hard to totally iguana proof a room unless you have nothing in it. You have to make sure you don’t drop any kind of sharp objects such as staples, needles, pins, etc...or leave anything that will fit in their mouths like coins, small pieces of plastic, even hair. Also if you do have a free roaming iguana it is advisable to make sure the iguana has food every moment of the day to avoid it from searching and eating something it shouldn’t be eating. As far as diet...go Reptile Food Charts Plus you need to add calcium and vitamin powder too, along with a good uvb bulb. They are a lot of work, its worth the work, but it is far more work then bearded dragons. However if you do research and still decide to get one...we will be more then happy to help you with the husbandry stuff. Also you may want to look into a rescue...there are alot of great iguanas that need homes. PE |

i agree w/ blue eyes, an iguana is a huge responsibility and there is tons of misinformation out there. as far as letting it free roam in your room, i do not recommend that because iguanas need a certain amount of uvb light a day, and unless your room is about 85-90 degrees, it won’t be warm enough for them. some people provide shelves in their rooms w/ heat fixtures and lights above them, but iguanas love to climb and i could see them easily trying to climb the lights and get burned. iguanas don’t always know what’s best for them, so as owners, we have to look out for their best interests, even though they would rather be roaming about. I was contemplating letting my ig free roam, but someone’s advice stopped me. now i take her out for about 1 hour a day, and she’s happy. Please do your research and really consider the commitment involved in an ig. it’s comparable to having a child- that grows up to 6 feet!:) |
