Constipated or just creature of habit?
since i first got my ig, which was 2 years ago, i’ve noticed that she doesn’t go to the bathroom on a daily basis. i did some research and got a lot of conflicting opinions on the subject. some people tell me that they should go daily, others say it’s normaal if they don’t. When I found out that bathing stimulated them to go, i started doing this daily, and this works fine.the problem is, if i don’t bathe her, she won’t go for a long time!(like, a week)Now i have to bathe her every day. i know it’s good for them as far as hydration goes, but i still have concerns since she won’t go w/ out a bath. thought that maybe it’s that she doesn’t like to do it in her cage, but still, i’m worried. Can anyone help? Thankx |

| I believe that is normal. A lot of them don’t like to go in their enclosures. So she is sort of potty trained which I think is great! |

thanks guys! i wasn’t looking at it that way! it’s strange though, because she really hates the water! almost every time i put her in the tub it’s a struggle. the only way i’ve been able to do this is by giving treats! now she is trained to stay in the tub w/out acting up cuz she knows she will get something for it! some people think that igs cannot be trained, since they are wild animals and supposedly are not very smart.(i beg to differ!)i used to believe the same until i decided to test the theory, and i have become much closer to iggy as a result. she will wiggle around the tub until i wave my finger at her and say"no!" in a deep, firm voice. i thought it was a fluke but every time i do it it works. then if she stays well behaved for a few extra moments, she gets some greens or some type of treat. getting back to the pooping, though...:) but do you think it’s normal for an iguana to hold it in that long? for a while i wasn’t giving her daily baths and she would only go once a week or so. someone told me i might be using too much calcium supplement. true? |

| No...it’s not good for them to hold it that long but they are stubborn and don’t like to soil their cage if they are used to going somewhere else. They like a routine. My last iguana held it for a week once when we moved. He was so upset and hated our new apartment. Eventually he got back on schedule though. |

we have the same problem with our iguana, he won’t go unless we put him in a tub of warm water, and can go a week or so, he starts to look bloated and i can tell by looking at him its time to put him in the bath, i was hoping someone here may have some suggestions. |

| My iguana has his own make shift toilet and goes at his own will. Usually he goes every day, but now with breeding season is here for him, he goes ever few days. So I believe it can be mood affected or your iguana does not want to use his cage as a toilet. Mine hates to be around his poop. For instance I gave him a bath yesterday and he pooped in the tub, then he went crazy trying to get out of the water. I could not clean it fast enough for him...he ended up waking everyone in the house. If you have to bath him every day to get him to poop then that what you will have to do, but you can use the effect of the water to try to train him to go elsewhere besides the tub. Like I said above my iguana has his own make shift toilet which you can view in my photo gallery. PE |

mine does the same thing. she hates water, as you read earlier, but she’ll deal until she poops, then it’s a mad race to clean it up before she destroys the sanctity of my bathroom! it can get messy. is there a safe substance to wash iggy w/ after a bath? i usually rinse her but i skeev (how do you spell that?!) the idea of her floating around w/ poop, only getting a rinse. |

| What I do after training them to poop in the warm water, is slowly stop filling the tub once they are used to this method. Eventually they associate the bathtub with pooping so you can just stick them in there, they’ll go...the urine and urates go down the drain. I scoop up the poop with toilet paper and flush it. You can then rinse them off but basically they don’t get in it. And then you can disinfect the tub once they are out. If they are not wanting to go in an empty tub, just turn the water on so it trickles and splash them a little with warm water. This should stimulate them. Young iguanas may take awhile before they adjust but I’ve never had any problems with this method...been doing it over 10 years and even taught my friend’s iguana the same way. |

| I had an Iguana a few years ago and she had her own sun screened porch. I was worried when I didn’t see any poopoos. It was funny when I was cleaning her room I had a bucket in the corner of the room and that was where she was going. It was so cool a potty trained Iguana. Look around she may have a spot where she goes too. |
