My 2 inches Baby Star tortoise is diying...
Im very sad but the vet said it is not my fault. It seems the babies STAR tortoises that are sold in Malaysia are heavily parasited. When you buy them they look healthy but within a few days or weeks they will stop eating/pooping and die. That exactly what is happening to mine.Any symptom but weakness, not eating and pooping just like the vet said. Im very sad, I should have taken it to the vet the day I bought it but I didnt know any good vet at that time!!And it looked so healthy and happy!!I did everything according to the book, I even planted a garden with weed and grass in my balcony because I read thats what they like to eat! Im a member of STAR tortoise yahoo.group.They are giving me support and they also gave me some addresses of vets specialized in reptiles in Kula Lumpur!Yes, there are a lot of Malaysians at that group and they are very helpful!!If I buy another STAR tortoise Ill de-worm it the first day I bring it home but is it possible to safely de-worm a 2 inches baby tortoise??The dose must be very little!!Any idea?? Flavia PS Of course I love your FORUM PE!!But I still want to see your photo. The photo of your face not the photo of your pony-tail!!He...he...he... PPS About Eyespy message...Is MK blond?? |

| Every animal you bring home should be quarentined and taken to the vet. I have two reptiles that had parasites from the petshop. My iguana is being treated now for parasites. Glad you like the forum Flavia. And I dont think Mk is blonde, but what would I know? I never wrote a book. PE |

The vet came here today...
he said he thinks the baby STAR is not sick but VERY stressed because it was taken from the wild in Myanmar (Burma)and smugled to Malaysia.People that smugle reptiles treat them very badly and people at the petshop do the same!! He said 99% of the baby Star tortoises die within a few weeks after have been bought. It is still alive and ate a little bit.I soaked it in water with salt and sugar and Im waiting to see what will happen. He said to me to keep it indoors because it is too stressed to tolerate the outdoors heat.He said to me that salt with sugar is the best treatment and that he does not recommend to soak any small animal in Pedyalite ...He wanted to give it an antibiotic shot but I said to him if it is only stressed no need to give a shot. The injection was too big and I was afraid of overdose.I lost once a beautiful female dog because the VET gave her a shot of a very high dose of novalgina. The dog cried and died in front of us.I ll never forget that!!Each time a vet come closer to a pet of mine with a shot I remember what happened to that dog.She had had 8 puppies when she died! Another thing. The vet told me that Shena is a male!!So I have 4 males and a baby which I still dont know if it is a male or a female...Shena does not look like a male but when he showed to me " her" femoral pores and the fat behind " her" eyes I began to believe " he" is a male. Now I understand why he didnt want to date TRex and Thorn!! The VET took some fresh iguana poop to his lab for analyse. He said to me if the STAR tortoise poops to take a sample to him for analyse too.IF it survives!!Flavia |

| First I have to ask you, if you did anything in particular to have the same post twice, like hitting the back button or hitting th button twice? Anyway...what does the sugar and salt do for the turtle? And does this mean all your iguanas are boys? PE |

Sorry I hope you will delete one but its not my fault...
I almost did that on Ks too.The Internet in Malaysia is very bad and keeps giving crazy messages. When I tried to post the message for the 1st time the Internet froze and started giving me weird messages ("sorry the server was not found please try again later").So I saved the message and tried again later. Then 2 similar messages were posted!!Salt and sugar mixed are very good to rehydrate de-hydrated animals. The doctors use that for human children in Brazil. Yes, that means I have at least 4 boys at home because nobody knows if baby Kenya is a boy or a girl. Flavia |

Flavia, I am so, so sorry!
| I hope that your sweet little Star recovers its strength and goes on to live a long and happy life with you. Please love it extra for me, and keep the maids far away! It is just so hard to see a sweet creature suffering because of human stupidity and greed. That tortoise is very lucky it found you. Heehee, no wonder Shena preferred not to choose a boyfriend. Oh well, now Shena has no risk of becoming eggbound, if that’s any consolation and perhaps baby Kenya will grow up to mother some eggs for you one day. Will you keep the name Shena or change it to something more manly? |

Re: Re: Sorry I hope you will delete one but its not my fault...

Well I hope your feels well soon! You need to try to give it some meds for the parasites if you can. We have to give stuff to our lizards (Pancur)sp? which works pretty well. I am also trying that herbal rememdy "para-zap" to see if it does anything. I am trying it on Sleestack but not Flapjack. Slee likes the taste of it and I will get another fecal done after 10 days of treatment to see if his counts are much lower. I will tell everyone the results as I am very interested in seeing whether this stuff works or not! |

Re: Re: Re: Sorry I hope you will delete one but its not my fault...

| panacur is pretty safe to use. I think you have to overdose your animal about 1000 times before any effect. You can buy a whole tube of it for $7. Its just horse medication. As far as parazap...I dont know about removing worms and stuff, but as for protazoa...I can say NOPE. Else I wouldnt be treating my iguana with Flagyl. However I do believe that it may encourage your reptile to goto the bathroom more, in turn helping the intestines absorb more nutrients. Xta: what parasites does your reptiles have? Also I havent heard any comment from you on what you thought about the forum stats I added this week. Flavia: Do you know what your turtle has? catch you later PE |
