 Convince me...

when i move out i am thinking of getting an iguana, as of now i have 3 leos. but i wanted something that likes to be held, and iguanas are just that. but there is also savvanah monitors. i thought it would be easier to feed iguanas because they eat greens, and savvys eat meat. so convince me why an iguana is better.

well this may not be convincing but iguanas r hard to get them to get use to u so they might not like u holding them at first but u would have to work w/ them but once u do and they get use to u holding them its all worth it at least i think so but ive never had a savanah monitor so i dont know the differences but i have heard iguanas r easier to tame i could be wrong

iguanas are hard to take care of and they cast alot but like Porc said they do get used to you holding thm if you hold them daily and train them and stuff, but it also takes a long time to train them sooooo id say go for the savvana moniter, learn about them first before you get them though

In all honesty, I feel a Savannah would be the lizard that requires the least maintenance. They are easier to feed than an iguana, require less space than an iguana, require less humidity than an iguana, and most tame easier than iguanas. What’s so tough about going to the freezer and taking out a mouse, rat or turkey meatball?

Iguanas have to have a wide variety of greens and vegetables in their diet. That means that you have to wash, stem, chop or shred all of those food products. You also have to pay attention to the CA/Phosphorus ratio in their diet. Iguanas require large amounts of UVB light so that means expensive bulbs that have to be replaced frequently or exposure to unfiltered sunlight. Sav’s don’t require UVB and to feed them all you need to do 80% of the time is thaw a rodent or two. Easy for me to see which is lower maintenance! :)

As rewarding as my green iguana is, I agree with Jif. I actually typed a message last night but I was so tired that I never sent it. I had a savannah monitor many years ago. They get a good bulky size. Like mentioned above they are easier to feed compared to an iguana that needs a very varied diet of greens and vegetables. I also think iguanas are more tempermental and have personality conflicts, they can be tame for years and then become aggressive, especially during the breeding season. My savannah was very tame compared to my iguana. They are also easier to throw a harness on then iguana, to take outside for some natural sun. So for ease of care I would select the savannah monitor.

Keep us updated on what you choose.

i guess ill go with a savvy. but i have a neighbor who has a full grown savvy and he says that rodents are bad for them. he feeds his boiled eggs, beef and chicken. some thing like that, i think it would be cool if he ate out of my hand.

Hey M1K3,

I would just take time a think about what you want. Take a look at some different pet stores and stuff.

You can feed your Sav mice and ground turkey with some calcium and vitamins. As far as hand feeding...when they get bigger I wouldn’t recommend you doing so, even as babies I don’t recommend it. Two times I been bit by my Water Monitor was hand feeding him. Get yourself some long progs taht you can hold the mice in and feed him like that.
