Well chicken wire unfortunately is pretty dangerous to iguanas. It can cut up their face and they can lose toes easily. Soon you will need to build a new cage anyway since it is rather small and igs grow very fast to a big size. I’ll try to post some links later of cage ideas.

Any sugestions about my ig enclosure???

Hi! Wow - that surely looks like a cool cage. Your ig is absolutely beautiful! He may hurt himself on that chicken wire soon. I have heard that chicken wire is hazardous b/c of the big openings withe the strong wire. I have a mesh type cage for my ig that I am getting ready to change. I am not quite sure what I am going to do yet...I may purchase a BIG bird cage or make one myself...if I do I will let ya know what I did & send ya pix. I took my older sister’s ig in & really have taken to the thing. I went to the pet store & got this Flukes floor covering, instead of the bark my sis used,,,,they say an ig can eat it have digestive problems....also I got her Flukes fake plants and this really cool eating bowl. Her cage looks like a tropical jungle....
very cool - and she seems to love the fake leaves. She occasionally hides her face, maybe to sleep? I don’t know - but it looks beautiful & she seems very happy...

Here are some web addresses. I compiled this list some time ago when I was researching it so a few of the links may not work anymore but most of them still do, hopefully. Copy and paste them into another window. You can get some ideas to build your own cage from them. I’ll include a photo of my ig enclosure too.

Can’t your iguana fit his head through the chicken wire? I really would change that out because he is bound to get hurt and more than likely at least lose some toes. Your set up and decorations look fun inside but the chicken wire and size of the cage will be problematic.

No, no stick with a heat lamp. Hot rocks malfunction and burn your iguana. If you are building another, at least switch to hardware cloth which is a metal mesh that is more sturdy and has smaller squares like your green plastic mesh on the inside. That shouldn’t cut him as much as chicken wire. If you can find rubber coated hardware cloth, that would be ideal. I know people have found it where they live but I can never find that here.

First thing is figure out how much money you have that you can spend. Then figure out how much room you can spare. Because you can make a nice basic cage fairly cheap if you have some construction ability. I personally have none , but I still try.

Also where is the uvb bulb?

be cool

Are you sure that’s a UV lamp? The reason I ask is that all the ones I know of are either a fluorescent tube or a mercury-vapor bulb, which don’t quite look like that. And lots of people have been fooled by bulbs marketed as "full-spectrum." I think that means that they have the full spectrum of light that is visible to humans, which does not include UV. (We wouldn’t really want completely full spectrum for most things anyway.) What brand is it?

I was thinking the same thing Kate. I never seen a uvb bulb like the one on top of your cage. And Kate is right...there are few bulbs out there that state they are full spectrum bulbs, but are not much more then a heat bulb. Plus I don’t think that lamp would be able to support the wattage of a uvb bulb.

You may have been mislead by the labeling of the box. I almost did the same thing.

Hmmmmm maybe i have been fooled.
At the box of the bulb was that " UVB " and ton anything about uva and full spectrum.I heared that a full spectrum lamb could also be a normal fluorescent lamp ???? Or i have to find one especialy for iguanas. My ig is getting dark some times....do you think that this is happening because of the bad lighting??

Yes, he could be going dark because of a lack of UVB, but it can mean so many other things too. Igs are heliotherms, meaning they absorb solar radiation through their skin as a way to warm their bodies. Without a decent quantity of UV and infrared rays coming from the light, he might not be getting warm enough no matter what the ambient temperatures are.

But he could also be dark because he is cold and wants to soak up more heat and get warmer, or because he is angry, sick or just unhappy. It’s pretty normal for them to be dark in the morning when the lights first come up, but if he’s turning dark a few hours after the heat lights have warmed things up you should try to figure out what is going on so he doesn’t get too stressed.

How hot is his basking spot? Most little igs need to be at around 100 degrees when they are digesting their food, although big or chubby adults have enough body heat to get that warm at lower temps. There should be a small zone at 100 that he can use right after eating, the rest of the warm side should be in the low to mid 90’s and the cool side of the cage shouldn’t drop below the mid-70s.

One way to know if it is a proper UV light is how much did you pay for it? The good ones are more expensive! Your cheapest bet is a good Zoomed Iguana 5.0 light...should be able to get it for $19 online plus shipping. You can use your other bulb for heat or even a regular household bulb will do for heat. You’ll need a flourescent fixture for your new UVB light. UV lights are essential so your iguana can utilize his calcium from his diet and won’t get metabolic bone disease (which is the #1 problem in iguanas).

If you want a combination heat bulb and UV light you can look at mercury vapor bulbs which last longer and are more powerful than the flourescents. You have to change out the flourescents every 6 months even though they are still working (the UV wears out though). The Mercury Vapor bulb you can use for a year but you will pay $35-55 for one. I recently got the PowerSun bulb from Zoomed to see if it is less annoying than the T-Rex brand which kept giving out on me.

Yvonne,

I don’t think geocities allows images for linking. You can always use the photo server here. Photo Server

Try that out.

Yvonne, where is he? I can’t find him!

What kind of bedding is that? Newspaper is a better choice for an iguana. They tend to accidentally eat their substrate and this can cause impaction, prolapsing, etc. Plus, it is easier to change out more often...many particle substrates harbor parasites.

You’re not mad at all. Iguanas are highly visual and they have strong likes and dislikes. I bought a purple and white betta fish for my Amazon because I took him to see a friend who owns a pet shop and he couldn’t take his eyes off the fish. Tonight Gizmo watched an entire half of a football game, just couldn’t stop watching. She also likes The Simpsons.

I second xta’s excellent advice. Working for 15 years as a veterinary surgical tech I would still be shocked sometimes at the things we pulled out of iguanas’ guts. Since they tongue-flick everything to investigate their surroundings all sorts of foreign matter can be inadvertently swallowed. It’s not at all natural for igs to be on a particulate substrate. In the wild they tend to hang out way up high in the trees where tongue-flicking is less likely to pick up grains of sand, clumps of soil, stones and other nasties that accumulate in the intestines. Plus loose substrates like yours tend to have a high acid content that can kill off the beneficial bacteria in the hindgut which an iguana uses to break down plant fibers such as cellulose. So that sort of substrate poses a double risk.
